Foam insulation board as gaming table/surface - question(s)
« on: January 31, 2016, 04:14:25 PM »
Hey guys, have any of you used thick/pink/blue insulation board sheets as a gaming "table" or surface?

Right now I have two 2x4 sized folding tables pushed together to make a 4 x 4 surface. I would like to get up to 4x6, but can't find a third table that is the same (identical height etc) and don't really love having that many seams between them all.

I was thinking of just getting a 4x6 sheet (cut a larger one down) from Home Depot, to lay on top. Then I could lay a FAT mat on top of it as the game surface.

The challenge I see there is the foam sheet would likely want to move around on top of the plastic tables (both being smooth surfaces) which could be annoying and/or disastrous during a game :)

Any thoughts or experiences with what works or other ideas to consider?

Durability isn't a big issue because the sheets are cheap and I'm not going to paint/flock/texture the actual sheet so I don't mind replacing it from time to time if it even becomes necessary. Really my main concern is keeping it in place.

Use plywood, the foam will snap often and at the worst time. It is relatively easy to build a plywood table the will fold to 4x3 for storage and doesn't need the other tables for support.

I use 50mm thick foam as my boards, but they go on a table. Plenty strong enough to game it's but I wouldn't want open space beneath a big one. Some idiot is bound to lean on it.
So many projects..... so little time.......

If all you need is a firm surface to put a mat on top of, I'd recommend getting a piece of MDF/Hardboard. It's cheap, easier to store and won't have the mess and chipping issues of foam. If slipping is an issue, the same place you buy the MDF probably will sell the cheap rubberized mesh that you put under rugs to keep them from slipping.

I have a few sheet of various sizes of MDF that are great for this.
