Best gaming mats/tiles/whatever?
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:21:53 PM »
Hey all,

I'm wondering what everyone out there uses for the base of their gaming surface, in terms of mats or tiles. I don't care if they come pre-printed, require paint or whatever. As long as they're not made from scratch, what do you use?

In particular I'm looking for options that can accommodate 3'x3' games, or possibly larger games up to 4'x4'. Options to consider are: city streets, generic grass or parks, industrial ground, dockyards and the like.

As for me, I currently have a few Zuzzy mats (which look great when they're painted, but their customer service stinks), some Secret Weapon clean city tiles (really need to paint these), and a few Mantic mats for Deadzone and Mars Attacks (would prefer something without the lines / spaces on them).

Anyway, comment below with your thoughts!

I really like the tiles from WorldWorksGames, their art is superb and they have a large variety of streets etc. in the standard 6x6 inch format, plus buildings. It's not neccessary to build the TLX tiles as they are intended, they could just be slapped onto a master board without cutting all those slots and whatnot.

I think the Hawk Wargames 28mm tiles were about the best I've seen, but they don't appear to ship out of Europe.  >:(

I have a GW grass mat, sadly now OOP, and a Deep Cut "City Streets" mat and a Cigar box "desert" mat on the way. With the 6x4 mats, you can always fold them a bit or drape them across a table to get a 4x4 or other size.

I really like the mats (cloth and mouse pad) that Deep Cut Studios makes, great guy and prices are reasonable. Go in with a group, but 5 get one free.

I also like the Games and Gears boards, but I did have a small bad encounter with the Kickstarter with people that can't follow up on a defective product but oh well, I really love the tables despite the annoyance.

The pre-printed game mats seems to surged into popularity in the past few years. I don't mind them, but other than for sports games I'm not sure they'd be up there for my favorites.

Deep Cut Studios mats are fantastic.  $100 shipped for a 6'x4' in the heaviest material (mouse pad/neoprene).  Beautiful print, not much "nonsense" on the mats to ruin the scale or limit the use of the mats.

The "Steppe" pattern is fantastic.  I'd imagine 3'x3' and 4'x4' would be very reasonable.  They release new content pretty often.  It's not cartoony art either.  Really nice stuff.
