Grumbledook's 15mm Sci-fi
« on: February 05, 2016, 10:53:19 PM »
Hi chaps.

I've discovered a new scale, well, more like rediscovered a scale which I didn't like (WW2) which I now think is utterly fantastic (Sci-fi). I had no idea there was so much variety available! As a result of some free time online (always a bad idea) I bought a few models from the Ion Age range to satisfy my curiosity. Now I'm hooked. My bookmarked webpages are in a state of confused trauma as I plan my next shopping spree.

In the midst of all this I painted one of my new models, a Female Legion Officer, whom I plan to be the head of an Intergalactic crime syndicte.

I must admit that I've become rather taken with this scale. To be honest, for me, there's alot of plusses. The diminutive nature (without being a bit too small to really enjoy) means that I'll be able to squeeze quite a bit into my flat, I've got some ideas for stackable scenery (which basically forms boxes to store the models), and I can get some quick small scale solo gaming done without taking over any family space. In my books that's quite a few boxes well and truly ticked!

Anyway, enough rambling, hope you like what you see and there'll be more coming soon.

Thanks for looking

Well, it's certainly the scale that keeps on giving!

I purchased some beauties from Khurasan Miniatures and painted one of the Post Apocalypse gang, I consider that to be Sci-Fi and these gangers will make brilliant space pirate types.

The painting on the first one is nice, but that on the second is superb!

Cheers for the kind comments!

The first figure was my first 15mm, and whilst I really enjoyed painting it I found the miniature itself to be very 'soft' in terms of sculpting detail, and I'm probably not quite good enough of a painter to add in the extra detail it needs. The space punk was simply a brilliant sculpt and the casting is so crisp that it basically does half the painting for you!

Got another space pirate painted up and ready for action:

I also tried my hand at a bit of sculpting this afternoon during a quiet moment at work, this is a WIP for a 15mm general Sci-Fi person.... could be a pilot, mechanic or whatever. There wasn't really any kind of a plan and the arms and head will be an interesting challenge! Sizewise it's a bit on the large side for exact 15mm scale so it fits in quite well-ish with Ion Age and Brigade Games figures. We'll see how it develops (so basically if I screw it up the next sculpting effort will be completely different and probably a sausage).

Thanks for looking.

... gooble gooble one of us.  Indeed.  Ion Age was an excellent place to start and you'll like painting their figures, I think.  If you find the sculpts a bit soft, bump up your highlights to emphasize the form.  I often highlight up to near-white, I think it makes the tiny figures stand out a bit more.

Nice!  How's that for service?  I can attest that CH's "Hell Divers" are great figures.

Thanks for the tip No Such Agency, I always chicken out at the very last stage when it comes to that hyper bold nearly white highlight but I'll force myself next time. Also loving the Tod Browning reference and those 'Hell Divers' look like great models beautifully painted.

Thanks also MrHarold, I will definitely be making a visit after payday! I'm very taken with the Hura Technocracy, really nice looking aliens with a great design concept. Oh who am I kidding, it all looks great!

Hello All, I've managed to sneak a bit more time with the putty and the little sculpture is getting there:

There's a couple more pics on the blog and a bit of a crit on the current state of the little fella, needless to say I'm aware of it's shortcomings but think I've learnt quite a bit by getting stuck in and having a go! Still more to do bit I'm actually really enjoying playing around with this.

Thanks for stopping by!

For a 15mm sculpt I think he looks great. Sure there are issues, but no one does a perfect job on their first sculpt. Looking forward to seeing how this comes out.
