Airfix Fort Sahara detail question
« on: February 08, 2016, 07:02:33 AM »
Could actually fit in pulp or sci-fias easily as colonial...
I am not building a Foreign Legion fort; but I'm scratch-building a small sci-fi outpost which would be a future equivalent, and wanted to add a detail which came from some dim memory - some sort of beams or stone blocks sticking out of the walls at around shooting firing platform level. Couldn't remember where I saw them, but a quick Google unearthed the Airfix French Foreign Legion fort.
What are these protuberances for? Are they just a construction feature? I can add them anyway as it's a sci-fi setting, but I now am curious about their actual purpose - and also whether they are a correct representation.
Here's a link to a nice pic of the Airfix kit:

Those are the ends of the timber used to construct the skeleton of the adobe buildings.

That's likely the case for the airfix fort, but occasionally protruding stone blocks were left to act as bases for scaffolding for later construction.

Wow, that was quick!
Thank you, I thought the protruding beams might be the case - we have similar construction in Malta using wooden beams to support limestone blocks for roofing, and although they are often flush with the wall in some instances you can get the odd protrusion.
Etranger - that sounds very interesting. Could make for an interesting addition to a model; and again we have that here in Malta with limestone construction too.

Thanks guys.  8) 8) 8)
