Warhammer Historical army books: Shieldwall...

How does this ruleset stand up against 'Lion Rampant', more importantly, are they a stand alone ruleset or do you need a core set of rules to use them?

Shield wall is a supplement to the Warhammer Ancient rules. It consists of army lists and information on the Viking age, you will need WAB rules to use the book. However all the supplements are nice introductions to various Ancient and medieval periods.

A good supplement, it covers norse the saxon kingdoms, scots, picts and irish plus litttle bit of character with noted unites. As said used with the warhammer ancients rules. Bigger armies to be honest for my dark ages games and armies they were 100 plus figues for a decent army 1500_2000 points

As hinted, it's ranked units compared to LR's skirmish. Warhammer Dark Age Battles.

Shieldwall's apparently a better supplement than most, but TBH as my first foray into WAB, it convinced me it was the warhammer system I didn't like, not just all the rules and meta piling up on the fantasy side of things.

Have you sourced a copy already...? 8)

LR ist made for Smaller Battles. WAB is made for bigger Battles, but I would use Hail Cesar. More balanced and still alive.

Yep, both for the core rules and the supplement. After reading the replies here I shan't follow up on them though.

Try them with just 500 points to see how they work and then decide. ;)

I think Warhammer Historical certainly works better for small battles.

I am a big fan of WAB and particularly the Shieldwall supplement - I have about 3,000 pts of Saxons, Normans and Arthurians...

I have never seen any reason to go with any of the newer sets of rules when WAB provides a good, fun game in an evening.

I am a fan of the wab rules, we've tried a few rule sets at our club but keep returning to wab, particularly shieldwall and the Arthurian supplement.

It must be a good supplement to Warhammer Ancients because some 'toerag' stole my copy from the Bring & Buy at Penarth Show a few weeks ago!

I like the shieldwall supplement, I personally feel the Age of Arthur, Fall of the West, Shield Wall and Byzantium supplements are great and offer allot of intro info and some great pictures of painted armies to inspire the imagination and painting sessions.
