Age of Arthur Campaign Day pics
« on: 15 February 2016, 05:40:01 PM »
Last Saturday, I pulled my beloved Welsh army out of semi-retirement for a rules set that I stopped playing years ago, but keeps coming back: WAB! Paul Scrivens-Smith had organised an 8-player campaign day for the Age of Arthur and I was persuaded to join in.  Before the event, I had to put together an army list for 1600pts, which was more work than I remember it! (I've gotten used to being spoiled by games like Chain of Command's orders of battle).  Fortunately, I could just about remember how to play.

We played three scenarios each against different opponents, all of whom were complete gentlemen.  There were some campaign tweaks such as the famous Bonus Cards (I was delighted to draw a 'Scandal' card that reduced my king's Leadership trait for having a relationship with a sheep, or something...) and a treasury of chocolate coins that one could use to influence the games.  The day was an absolute hoot with many 'WAB moments' that one doesn't always see in other rules systems, but highly entertaining none the less.  Many thanks to Scrivs for organising - I'm sure he'll post his own report soon.

Apologies that some of the photos have come out smaller than usual - something funny happened when I downloaded them.

Andy Hawes' fine line of spearmen

Marchlew's Welsh spearmen capture a flock of sheep in The Cattle Raid scenario - and hold it against all comers

David's slingers take the herd and run for the woods

Saxon violence fails to shift the Welsh from the enclosure on the hill

Welsh Teulu getting stuck in against Saxon warriors

Welsh and Saxon face off: who will fail their warband test first? (me)

Going round the houses!

We even had a visiting warhound - should have brought the Irish army instead...

Look like there are some finely painted armies.
What's better, it sounds like the players had fun.

Excellent pics and I've got to admit that I'm green with envy!!

I really wanted to make it down but couldn't find anyone willing to go and as I don't drive.....  :'( :'(

I expect that we'll be seeing more on Tom and Paul's blogs respectively?

Cheers,
Darrell.

PS. We still seem to use WAB at the Durham club for 28mm 'Ancients' as well as other rule sets.... possibly stuck in a time warp :)

Wonderful looking games there James.  :)

Takes me back to all those inspiring campaign weekends at Warhammer world (that, may I add, I didn't take part in as I was too busy playing with Cowboys..) many years ago.   :D

I remember you playing Cowboys Ray :)

I was lucky enough to play in one of James' El Cid  as well as an Age of Arthur campaign weekenders. Also an El Cid one day campaign at the Newark Irregular's scout hut!

Salad days  8)

Not on my blog, sadly Darrell.
I wasn't able to attend this one (which is a real shame as I suspect it'll be the last one Scrivs puts on this side of the pond).

Mason, many thanks, your tech support is much appreciated! I changed my laptop recently and this was the first set of photos I have edited on it, so I obviously messed something up.

Yes indeed😕. You were missed. It was a nice chance to reminisce about the early days of WAB and put me in mind of the many events that Steve J and I ran in Newark and then later at Warhammer World. I was always grateful that Scrivs took over running that kind of thing, especially when he added a treasury of chocolate coins to his events!😀
