Anyone owns a Smer viking ship?
« on: February 28, 2016, 04:50:14 PM »
Hello, I am thinking of buying the smer 1/60 viking ship model. But before doing so I would like to see how well it goes with 28mm figures. Does anyone own a ship and would like to show an image with a figure to compare?

Thanks in advance!

If this is the old Aurora one then it should fit perfectly with most 28mm figures from what I remember.  I made a couple about 30 years ago for a school project on the Vikings that my children were doing.  It came with a crew of pretty awful figures so I used 25mm Vikings and they looked OK but were a wee bit small so 28mm ones should be OK.  It is more Hollywood than Historical but looks the part!

Should comfortably carry about 30 Vikings and plunder!

Sounds great! I believe it's the old Aurora one. Still if anyone is willing to share a picture I would be very happy :)

The Smer ship is 1:72 scale - it comes with a bunch of crew.
Nice model though. I use it with 28mm figures.
I have a scratch built empty ship of the same size - so I use the Smer ship when the Vikings are rowing/sailing and swap it for my scratch built wooden model when they reach land; my model is crude but has plenty of space for putting figures.

I've used the 1:50 scale Revel Viking ship and it works perfectly. The only real modification that it needs is to grind it down to waterline.
Here it is in action with 28mm figures:

Smer currently has 2 different models - art. no. 902, and art. no. 904. 902 is listed as 1:60, and 904 as 1:180

The 1:60 one is the one I have. The boat might be 1:60 but the figures are not; they are definitely 1:72

Could it be, that you have the Emhar viking crew?

which fit their 1/72 Gokstad ship:

No, the kit I have is the SMER hard plastic one (I've had it for at least 25 years; I don;t think the Emhar one even existed when I got it).

I don't own the smaller kit but work somewhere that has had both in stock and I have found both of these kits have 1:72 scale figures regardless of the ship scale. I suppose it's just a quirk of the kit. I do own the Revell one and it is perfect for 28mm but again the crew are 1:72.

I wouldn't label this 1:72

The (quite frankly, awful) models are 'true-scale', though, much more slender than heroic models, but with about 26mm from footsole to eye level, scale is clearly in the vicinity of 1:60 (25mm figures traditionally labeled 1:64).

That isn't one of the figures that I have. Mine were largely rowers.
