Tables!

I think perhaps it will be worth my while to spend a bit more and get some good quality folding tables, rather than prowling charity shops for the elusive 'perfect' drop leaf table which probably doesn't exist.

The perfect drop leaf does exist, but rare now. You need a 1950's / early 1960's wooden family drop leaf.
They are big, solid, heavy, but generally fold up to 6' x 3' or larger.
Or there is a large square one (almost square 30" x 36") that extends by pulling the top apart and slotting it on either side of a second top that sits under it to give a table 6' x 3'.
Again big and heavy on 4 solid legs.
You might find tables like that in an auction room. Cheaper if they don't come with a set of chairs, managed to buy one a few years ago because I needed a piece of oak board for a worktop and it was cheaper to cut up a second hand table that buy wood at a timber merchant. Gave the legs to a friend who does wood turning.

Were they good and sturdy? I found a few such pasting tables, but thought they looked a bit flimsy compared to the ones I just posted.

Just about sturdy enough, although you had to be careful not to knock them. Probably not as sturdy as the banqueting type ones.

I know the sort of table you mean, but I don't think I'm really looking for a big heavy piece of dining room furniture. I'm leaning much more towards the idea of folding tables from Ikea now!

I use a couple of these and a pair of MDF boards.  The beauty of these saw horses for me is that they are adjustable in height and help to prevent back ache

I used banquet tables.
Three, 6 foot by 2 1/2 foot tables.
One, 5 foot by 2 1/2 foot table.
That give me lots of combinations.
Its a pain to put them up and take them down,
as I play in my living room, but that's life.
And my wife is very understanding.

Two decorating tables g clamped together with a cloth over the top. Roughly 4X6. Costs less than £30.

They're 74cm/29" tall and wide. £30 each, better price than most AFAIK.

I use our dining table, which is just about usable for 28mm, but perfect for 6mm. When we had a bigger place I used an old dining table with an MDF board on it, but I no longer have the room for such opulence.

Just as a matter of interest how many of you wargame on a bed?  A double king size sort makes for great games and if using cloth as the wargame surface then the bedding underneath helps create natural looking hills and undulations.

Likewise a large board piece of wood can work well on top of a table to increase the size.

Certainly been years since I wargamed on the floor. Would love to do a HG Wells type game, especially something WWI, in the garden, be like childhood all over again and digging trenches into that useless green lawn would be fun.
