Looking for renaissance astronomer and magician
« on: March 29, 2016, 10:18:52 AM »
Hi,

Maybe a bit off from the normal subjects on this board, but here goes.

I'm looking for 28mm Renaissance figures. More specifically Astronomer/scientist types and something suitable for a court magician or alchemist. Also interested in different jester miniatures, but those seem to be a bit more abundant on the market. Does anybody know of suitable minis straight away or some good base miniatures for conversions? Preferably something a bit stylized with "tools of the trade" like the telescopes, angle measurement tools etc. for the astronomer or cards, vials etc. for the others.

Something along these lines:

W had one of it's magic flavours based on astronomy - celestial magic - and had at least a couple of models of a sorcerer of this type.

Crisis 2011 figure?

Though no idea where to get one. Perhaps asking on "Wanted" Board?

Darn that's exactly the kind of miniature I've been looking for! I guess it's time for the Wanted board then.

These from WHFB might work:

Master Engineer (needs toning down, likely)

Leonardo di Miragliano (OOP I think)

Engineer (likely OOP, gun needs removing)

Would you be willing to part with it ;)

GW does have some nice minis that could be suitable. Too bad most of the best ones are now OOP and going for ridiculous prices on ebay. I'll probably try to adjust a few of their Engineer characters to suit. Removing weapons could easily be all that's needed. Slight fantasy elements aren't an issue as these won't be used in a strictly historical setting, but rather a renaissance Italian setting with some added magic.

Lowtardog: Thanks for the tip! Haven't run into the company before and they actually do seem to have quite a few other interesting sculpts as well.

I think the guys that did this figure for Crisis still might have one on hand. I got one last year from them along with a couple of other figures that I was looking for. They are members on here. I forgot what their profile name is though.

I have the third one in my post (furry hat and spyglass) if you're interested. Non-ridiculous price, unpainted and in Helsinki :D

Reaper 03291 Heinz Stargazer is clearly a professional.

I agree that the old Perry Warhammer Empire figures were some of the best for this.  Here's a nice comparison of some Renaissance "civilians" that could give you ideas.http://wk.frothersunite.com/misc/empire/comp_civ2.jpg

And here's a jester.  The model is “Omoklon, Twisted Jester” from Guild of harmony. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_Lxzf_MsdTk/Tx1EbUcHj2I/AAAAAAAAAcs/e_pZCQzNfQo/s400/P1030502.JPG
