Resin building comparison to 4Ground/Tri
« on: 20 April 2016, 02:44:07 AM »
All,
My town of Ridge Spring is in a dilemma. Much of the town has been built with resin structures from a well known company. Unfortunately, the producer has not added new structures to the line and Indians have cut the telegraph wire (no communications to emails) the web store is up, but not taking orders.Sadly, I am at the point of getting MDF buildings to finish the town, but do they work well with resin structures?
Regards,
Hop Along Romelll

While a huge fan of MDF stuff, that is perhaps the only issue.  They do tend to stand out a bit with resin buildings.  I guess it would depend on the brand/style of the resin though.

MDF is just about perfect for anything made of timber: Wild West stuff and indeed things like settler's cabins for French & Indian War.
It works much less well for European and Middle Eastern stuff which was built of stone or mud-brick. Resin is better for that.

I would agree its probably best not to mix resin and MDF. I will go for resin for FIW though as I want a rougher backwoods sort of look.

Powerful preference for resin - and fortunate that in 15 mm there is a lot available for Old West.  I just don't trust MDF for long term durability.  And only a few folk seem to put out the effort to make it look decent.  Easy to do a quick paint on resin and get a decent result.  And not that much extra effort to get an outstanding result.

Hope you sort out your quandary.  You could convert to 15 mm!   lol

Besides Old Glory and Arnica, is there any other WW resin companies that make buildings? For 28mm.
Can't go to 15's after I just finished painting the Foundry figs...

There are probably some other companies who may do resin adobe style stuff (Crescent Root used to but they've switched to MDF).  I doubt you'll find many wooden structure Old West buildings in resin though, outside of some small bits.

Don't forget hovels, I have their saloon and it painted up quite nice.  It mixed well with the scratch built and the perry grocery store.  Check out my Flickr website.

Resin and scratchbuilt. MDF looks fake. I'm sorry, but it just does. I'm sure it's fine for most people, but for those of us who want realism, it's resin all the way.

I've seen MDF modified to look better and it does. But it still looks like MDF.
Just MY OPINION. Everyone is free to differ and I respect that.

It all looks fake to me, it's all far too small for the real thing! :D ;)
Sorry...I'll leave now.

A second vote for Hovels.  Their WW stuff is great.

MDF works just fine for the Old West but it really does need working on to make it look more realistic, as others have mentioned, to avoid that 'flat and out of the pack' look.
I have mixed resin, MDF and scratchbuilds in my town and think it works just fine with a little effort.
If you base all of the buildings consistently that helps to unify the look whilst the building material mixture helps add a little variety.

Whatever material you choose needs a little work to bring it up to scratch but they all work, even MDF, just not straight out of the pack....in my opinion, that is.

Mason your table is crazy, hard to tell which is which :-*.  I remember seeing your livery stable from Hovels a few years ago.  I still haven't picked one up yet!

Yeah,
there are a lot of awesome gaming tables around LAF, but Mason's table is propably one of the greatest Inspiration for Wild West Gaming I've ever seen.
All the lovely details. Whenever i stumble on pictures of his table I find another Details that was undetected before. Just can't get enough  of it 8)

@ Topic: I have only few experience with Old West Resin Buildings (though I've got the celtic village from Grand Manner, awesome stuff!) but I have alot of Experience with MDF Building vs Scratch Build: I tested different Manufacturers (mostly 4Ground and MaxMini'Wild West Exodus range) and I am a little bit dissapointed. The Buildings look way to clean for my taste. When thinking about Wild West Towns, I don't prefer the look of 'that sober town'. Instead I like that used and dirty looking town that most Old West Movies use (not speaking about that town suffering from the Civil War that was featured in Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo right now :D)
So i changed completely to Scratch Build Stuff without perfect angles, even looking floorboards or exact the same looking wooden planks.
I really like that look of hasty fixed walls, broken Windows ands stuff like that.

Scratch Build laundry (first attempt of Scratch Build)

MDF Building (Wild West Exodus Range) with some extras

And the most important reason for me to use scratch build (or resin buildings) is the detailed structure of all the wooden parts. MDF surface is way too clean. You have to put a lot of work into it...
