Round of Fire playtest
« on: May 15, 2016, 05:43:58 PM »
Trying out the latest beta version of Round of Fire, and it just keeps getting better.  Got the first part of the game in, before the 8-year old girl's birthday party.  So much pink! :o  There is a lot still to be written in the rules, but a sample scenario, complete with force lists is included.  Here's the write-up:
http://wanderingview.blogspot.com/2016/05/round-of-fire-update-playtest.html

 A few questions so far:

- A machine gun has no setup time?

-What does "-1" on the turns for the MG mean?  I assumed that meant if the fire action would take 5 turns it only took 4.

-Can a machine gun only hit 1 target per firing?  Wish it had AoE also.  Had a case where he caught a fireteam in the open but only took one out.

-Boost.  I wanted to boost the irregulars using my sergeant.  One team of the irregulars was within range, the other wasn't.  Can I boost the unit?

-What does "damage 2/6" on a rocket launcher mean?  I blasted a tightly-bunched team with an RPG and wiped the entire team out, using 6 for the hits.  I then re-rolled using 2 for the hits and still creamed them.

-I assume "overwatch" is a variable?  i.e. "I'm going on overwatch for 3 turns.  After that, if I haven't activated, I have to do something else before overwatching again"

-How does melee start?  I assumed since my guys were 1 unit away, they could move into melee and attack.  Otherwise, how could it ever start?

Having a ton of fun with this, keep it coming!

Hello Tom!!!

Sounds really great!!! Answering your questions:

-setup time:  it does: it shuold be 3-4 turns? It should be written in the weapon card?

-the "-1 turns" for the machinegun: Exactely, it's written somewhere in the rules, i should make it VERY clear in an example box in the final manual! The idea is that after you've set-up the gun (which requires a remarkable time, making it useless for quick actions) shooting is a rather easy task.

-Machine gun can hit only one figure per burst, but it has 2 or 3 burtst. AoE is an abstraction that games like Gruntz used to indicate that more than one target could be hit, but i'm not fond of it. Having 3 bursts, it has the firepower of a heavy fireteam!!!!

-Boost: that's unclear in the rules, that's right. I'd say yes! remember that irregulars are fanatic, so boost works for 1 turn more! I use it like hell in the last game on friday!

-Damage 2/6: yet another unclear point in the rules, you're right: 2 is for infantry, 6 for vehicles! Rocket launchers are not much effective against infantry, while grenade launcher have the opposite effect, more or less.

-Overwatch: the turns duration is variable, up to 7 turns (one round). But you MUST do something between two overwatch. A Wait action of 1 turn will work.

-Melee: Good point. I Should re-read the rules about. But as you did seems smart!  :D

I can't wait to read the second part of the battle, if you're planning to continue it! ^_^
as a note, we rarely use heavy covers, they mostly are light covers. I'd say that rocks should be light covers, while heavy ones are more like bunker positions and sandbags specifically meant for covering.

Again, GREAT game and great report! I'm so lucky to have you as beta-tester!!!

Well, we survived the pinkness of the birthday party, and managed to squeeze in the rest of the game before disaster struck again. Despite losing over half their force, the Dystopian Order managed to drag victory from the jaws of defeat.

The game is well worth checking out!  Try a beta-test yourself, you just might like it.

That's not a bloodbath.  The soon-to-be released report of an action involving first contact with a previously-unknown xenomorph is sure to sound more like a bloodbath!   :o

For Immediate Release:  A force of Colonial Marines was lost in action with a previously-unidentified Xenomorph species on a fringe planet.  Initial reports are that the marines were on a peaceful escort mission to gather scientific data when they were ambushed by hostile aliens.  The marines performed to the high standards expected of them, sacrificing themselves to ensure their escorted civilian scientist made it home alive.  All military forces in the region have been placed on high alert, and patrols are now considered to be on a war footing.  Casualty figures are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

First contact report, as an under-powered Marine squad gets mauled by a bunch of alien space bugs:

Bonus points to anybody who catches the discrepancy between the news release and the actual report...
