Well, at least the table looks great and the miniatures are starting to grow on me more and more too ;)

Sounds like the rules indeed need a lot of clearing up 8)
Let me hear the battle cry
Calling on the wind

That's really too bad about the rules, Grub. I had high hopes for the classic game. Maybe the earlier versions are more comprehensible? Might be worth shooting a note to the guys at the Starguard group (I think there's a big one on Yahoo), just to see if, perhaps, they'd recommend playing with an earlier set, or if somebody's done a fan re-write?

You may have already done that, o'course, just a suggestion.

Do keep up the posts, though, I'm really liking what I'm seeing. Love the old miniatures, though I wish there were more poses for some... particularly digging the Terellians, though there only appears to be one mini in the range!

However, I will kepe watching this thread for more updates on your fantastic battlefield. Does it have a name yet?

I've been using my vast imagination and calling it "the Purple Planet" ::)

When I use it for Mutants & Death Ray Guns it'll be Toxic Earth :)

Love the old miniatures, though I wish there were more poses for some... particularly digging the Terellians, though there only appears to be one mini in the range!

Not sure about the whole line, but I purchased the "Dreenoi Chugs" pack (25 figures) and there are a lot of them in poses that aren't pictured.  Since several of the other races have large packs, there may very well be more poses not shown, but, I'm not sure.

Whatever you decide to do, you have accomplished a whole lot the last couple of weeks. I wish that I could focus on a single project like that, and get so much done in such a short time!
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Starguard not dead!

Well, an interesting turn of events!  My friend Steve is more like me than I knew.  Seems when he g4ets focused he just keeps going.  This is his latest letter:

Quote
I want to try and fix Starguard.

I know you'll think I'm nuts.

The game really pisses me off something fierce.

I understand that my attempts may prove fruitless...but so much of
what is wrong is just crap presentation and laziness...

I've already started...so save your breath.

I am trying to straighten out the mess of info and turn it into some
recognizable stats. My goal is to keep as much of the game as possible
without being forced to interpret or add/correct.

If I do come out the other side of this thing with better playability
I hope that you will be willing to give it a go.

So, I’m not sure that we’ll actually be playing Starguard as much as a homebrew Sci Fi game…or maybe we’ll end up playing Starguard as it is supposed to be played?

In any case, we’ll be playing something with those minis. :)

When I played the game at a convention it didn't seem too complex but I do note the game was being run by a guy that had been into Starguard since nearly day one. It seemed to be a pretty basic percentile system with modifiers. Then again, I don't know how much he dropped to streamline the game for convention play. The game was fun and got me interested in Starguard but being a creature of diversion something else caught my eye until I saw this thread and really want an Amazon force.
The description of the rules presentation reminds me of the Star Blazers Fleet Battle System where I practically had to learn the game by osmosis or something. I swear I woke up in a cold sweat one night and suddenly understood how to play.

I will say that your project rocks, Grubman, and has been another diversion which I'm having to ignore as I continue to work on my Chinese martial arts fantasy game before I get sidetracked and buy some Necromorphs, a h hell I'll probably end up doing it anyway and buying the rules as incomprehensible rule books make me happy. That the only explanation I can give as  to why Fantasy Games Unlimited's Aftermath! made such good reading in bed before lights out.

It's not that it's really "complex", it's just so badly presented and explained, and has a million holes and dead end "rules" that have no explanation. :(

I'm looking at several other rule systems (top suggestions are 5150, but I'm not to sure about that one, and No Limits, which looks treally good...but I haven't read them yet).

Well, OK, I’ve got the last bits of terrain for the initial table…the hills!  Normally these types of hills look a little cheesy…but for my alien world they look just right.  I made some of them 4 tier because they look even more “alien” that way IMHO.

I like how they cam out.  I used the standard technique; cutting them out with a Styrofoam cutter, gluing them together, and painting them (paint with sand mixed in.  A little drybrushing and some static grass finished up the look.

So….the table is ready!  Unfortunately I have to run to game night (I’m already late) to play Wild West Cinema.  Tomorrow, I’ll set up the whole table and take some pictures!

I'd give endorsement to 5150. About the only thing about 5150 is that the figures kind of play themselves once you get into the thick of it. It's not a bad thing mind you, just different from what I'm used to with other wargames. I'd note that 5150 is on sale this month if that's any extra incentive. Once you get the hang of it games are fun and over with in time to still grab a drink at your local watering hole to discuss the after game.

I'd say Gaslight, it's very sci-fiable and mod friendly.

I can suggest Vor : the game is excellent and can  be played at squad level or at platoon level.

I'll second that recommendation for Vor. One of the cool things about it when it was released was that rules were provided to stat up your own armies, which means you can get pretty creative. If I remember, the rules for army creation weren't that bad, just needed things like special rules for the non "official" armies, which wouldn't be hard to do.

Like the contrast on those hills - only thing: Why is the rubble pink and not grey; I suppose the rubble broke off mainly below the surface (I'm trying to find a natural explanation for something that doesn't need one, I know, it's just the way my brain works...  ;) )

heh heh, that's the way I did it on all the terrain.  I just decided early on that the "rubble" would be larger, or hard, chunks of ground rather than rocks, just to sort of break up the monotony of the purple lanscape.  It could have went either way.
