Noticed this thread quite late, shame on me!

Excellent thread and excellent contributions folks! :D

#57 Catholic League Ensign c.1632 (Warlord Games miniature, flag by FlagsofWar)

My entry is an officer fighting for the Catholic-Imperialists during the thirty years war. The flag, one of the many still unassembled I have (though I want more Bavarian ones, pls pls pls Iain.....) ;), was chosen for the jesuit symbol, an iconic icon used for the fight against protestantism and curiously enough restoration work started on the 17th century jesuit convent in Valletta a few days ago, so it was a sort of inspiration.

The ensign has just started marching - his boots are too bright, I guess after a few hundred metres they'll be mud-splattered! lol

I'm really impressed by the painting on these Horcata Miniatures, not my period but still impressive.

lol That's true enough.....it's difficult to hold the flag like that, though not impossible. Well, he must have bulging muscles beneath that slashed doublet!

Looking through my TYW book, flags were carried like that, flag bearers were expected to drill and be both strong and dexterous.

I sincerely doubt that anyone would be able to keep a fairly heavy thing like a standard in that position for more than a few moments.
Try standing with your arm stretched out in front of you with just a tiny thing in your palm. You'll tire very fast.

So, judging by that picture at the top, he is just about to toss his pole.....

I think we are talking past each other. It is the pose as such, which suggests he is marching forward with the standard held aloft in one outstreched arm, not the way he grabs the pole, I have my doubts about.

He may well be waving it about to signal an advance or something like it, though.

Now, let's get some minis painted!
