Oldhammer Terrain for Frostgrave

Excellent work all around.  You really make it look like most of the warhammer terrain is better suited to warband skirmishes like Mordheim, Frostgrave and Song of Blades than for company/battalion size WHFB engaements. I've also just finished up a few of the Harry Potter chess set pieces as statues. They really look great as large 28mm terrain.

Are the roofs of the crypts removable?

No they are an integral part of the model, four walls and a roof, you have the option to stick them on their bases, so you can still place models in them or use them without the base

Really nice to finally get to use the terrain and with a Deep Cut cobblestone gamingmat to really bring it to life!

What are the red and blue 'arc' pieces? in the last photo? They look useful.

They are "persistent" spell effects, wounded, crossbow unloaded so that you have a visual reminder that fits around a standard 25mm base. Available in acrylic or mdf from a company called Blotz.

Another blast from the Warhammer Past.
Using an old Games Workshop Mighty Fortress from the late 1980's. Made from high density polystyrene. Using one tower and one wall section.

Wall section cut in half using a small wood saw.


Base for the wall made cut from 3mm MDF and then edges beveled using a large wood file


Positioned to make sure they would fit


Using a small fret saw to remove sections of the wall. These where then filed down to give a more worn and old look. All of the spare "chunks" used to make rubble pile.


All glued down and drying


Next up its filler time to cover any gaps, followed by adding sand, small stones and other bits.



Skeleton Archer for scale.


Primed with some "Buff Titanium" to seal the polystyrene and little bits of rubble. With the finished skeleton archers.



Next it's a matt black spray paint and then copius amounts of grey drybrushing

As I recall, that Styrofoam doesn't react will to spray primers, so you might want to base coat with brush on primer.

And by Sigmars bushy eyebrows! Please do not use spray paint!! It will melt the styrofoam.

The primer was a nice thick coat, covered 99%, the 1% that got missed actually added to the decay by giving some of the flat parts a dimpled effect.

I have had one set of the mighty fortress since it was released, got used a lot for 3rd edition WFB, then doubled up for the Deeping Wall in LotR Journeys. Then it sat in the shed for 10 years in its box. The last year at Salute I found a second set that I got for a bargain price of £25.
So i would rather carve it up and use it as it was intended, as an awesome piece of terrain rather than a forgotten box in a dusty shed. Besides with two sets I can have a complete fortress and a blown up one!

Part of me cries inside because you chopped up the Mighty Fortress, something I couldn't afford back in the day (or now!), but it looks so great that I'm okay with it.
