Would it be weird to play FrostGrave on 2d map
« on: June 13, 2016, 09:45:24 AM »
Hi,

I am new to this game and just received the rulebook and wanted to start. Seems this game requires alot of terrain to be enjoyable so wondering will 2d map like heroic maps works?

Plan to slowly provide little 3D elements as time goes by as 2D maps are easier to make.

Anyone tried in 2D before?

I would say it would be difficult to limit the killing power of archery types and spell casters, where line of sight and cover bonuses make a big difference but it should be okay for a while until you add some physical pieces of terrain. We all have to start our collections somewhere and use what we have available. No point delaying the fun while you wait to fill a table with terrain  :)

I agree. You could easily play on 2d maps, but you still want some scatter terrain - although a handful of rocks would do.

Yah.  Anything but 2d.  Rocks, books, statues... anything.

If your 2d maps show where walls, cover, and difficult terrain are, the go for it. D&D Miniatures and Heroclix both had good fold-up poster maps perfect for this kind of game. There are also a lot of excellent 2d resources at drivethrurpg.com and related sites. In a pinch, you could simply use a marker on a piece of poster board. As long as you and your opponent know what and where the terrain is, there should be no problem.

With that said, part of the fun of miniatures wargaming is the pageantry of fully painted miniatures on a completely developed 3d world.  So while 2d can get you up and running faster, it really is more satisfying with 3d terrain. If you like papercrafting, there is a huge amount of free, easy to assemble terrain template PDFs out there. Just print them, assemble them, and you can have a beautiful game boatd in no time.

You could use vertical oriented tissue boxes and then you will have a useful accessory when the crying begins... ;D
