A World Aflame , who wins the melee?
« on: 18 June 2016, 03:46:38 PM »
Hello,

fighting in the melee leave me with a problem alone. The list on page 50 give the + and - per figur, but the text don´t say, who wins the single fight. The Zulu rules from the same author say "The higher result wins". Is that wright here, the rule machanic seems to be the same.
The book, artwork, the rules are really nice. Like it very much.

Hi Sebastian

I'm certainly NOT the rule writer but having used the rules a fair bit the "melee results" rules are as follows (copied directly from the rule book)

The loser of the melee is the unit that suffered the most casualties. The loser immediately takes a morale test and reacts accordingly. • If the melee was drawn, both sides take a morale test. • This is the end of the first melee turn. If the morale tests and the attrition levels on the figures have not decided the result of the conflict, the melee continues for another turn. Both attacker and defender do not have control of their figures at this point and so do not have the option to retreat. The melee must continue into the next turn and the process repeated. • If this is the case neither player uses the initiative rule. The melee will be the last action to take place on the following turn once all other units have been activated. • Other units are free to join in the melee during this second turn.

In short, whoever loses most figures is the loser. To be honest, melee is a last result with these rules. You're much better using firepower!

Hope this helps

Ian

Hello Ian,

thanks for your answear, but that is exactly not my problem. The question is, which single figure in the melee is lost (out). For the single fight betwen this 2 or 3 single figures, I need this clear statement.
So I believe that the higher result of the dice + modifer wins, but I don`t find that statement in my rules.
The rest is clear to me.

Highest score wins (look at the modifiers, good stuff boosts your dice roll, bad stuff reduces it)

I have these rules and they are fascinating....can I ask what scale of figures you use for them?

I'd say use any you like - I've always used 28mm with them (Spanish Civil War) and am toying with doing Russian Civil War and 3rd Afghan War in the same scale (using these rules). I reckon they would work well with 15mm, not so sure re 10mm or below though.

The tips I've found with them are 1) if you can, create a scenario (rather than straight encounter battle) to get the most out of the Event Cards, 2) take plenty of terrain to break up fields of fire, and c) throw yourself into the spirit of the rules (they are very "Charles Grant" like which I feel really works in this era). In short play the game and not "the rules" (if that makes sense?).

Above all - have fun!!!! These rules got me engaged in a whole new period which I've never regretted!
