Having failed to stop the supply column reaching Fort Kindling (see
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=91517.0), Henri La Longue Baguette and his mixed force of Canadian Milice and Huron Braves headed toward Brownsville in the Ohio River Valley, fuelled with rage and desperate for revenge.
Word had reached Henri through is network of informers that to celebrate the success of the skirmish, and the subsequent awarding of a contract to supply the British commissariat with beer, Bartholomew Bibbly was planning to create an effervescent beverage akin to Champagne "but superior in all respects"
"Sacre Bleu! Mon Droit!" were the words heard from outside La Longue Baguette's tent when he heard the news from his spy. At dawn the following morning the French force struck camp and marched westward with one solitary intention, to burn Bibbly's Brewery to the ground!
Meanwhile, unaware of the impending situation, Bartholomew Bibbly polished his tankard and reflected on his good fortune, a government contract with the army. This was going to set him up for life, not only him, but his brother Benjamin and his son's Bertram and William; or Billy as he was affectionately known.
The Owner and employees of the Bibbly Brewery: L to R, Bertram Bibbly, Billy Bibbly, Bartholomew Bibbly and Benjamin Bibbly.
To celebrate the contract and to show his gratitude to the stout men of the Pennsylvania Militia who had defended his supply wagons en-route to the Fort, Bartholomew opened his cask room to the survivors, many of whom were camped at the brewery. Having been sampling the Brewery's wares since noon, some of the Militia were 'unprepared' for the action that broke out in the late afternoon.
