Thursday just gone we started a mini campaign to see how it would work out using SP2 and scenarios from Across A Deadly Field.
The 1st scenario from the mine run campaign was the battle of tan yard hill.
Forces: CSA:
Union: Big man 1 status 3
big man 1 status 3 2x units of 8 infantry
1x unit of 8 cavalry Big man 2 status 2
big man 2 status 2 2x units of 8 infantry
2x units of 8 infantry (new yorker zouaves) Big man 3 status 1
Big man 3 status 1 1x unit of skirmishers
1x unit of 8 infantry Big man 4 status 1
Big man 4 1x unit of 6 skirmishers
1x unit of 6 skirmishers
Support
artillery piece colour party x2

the special victory conditions stated that the game should last 7 turns and at the end of the seventh turn if the CSA had any troops on the top of tan yard hill they would be victorious likewise if the union managed to capture the hill then they would win. the CSA if winners would then get a position of strength for the 2nd scenario. but as SP2 is card-based the probability of the union not having many activations in that short time meant that it would last very long, therefore we chose to just give a time limit seems that it was on a thursday night at our local club.
the first few turns went as one would of predicted, the unions (who were attacking) kept getting the wrong big men drawn out. and even when they did, the curse of the '3' command cards plagued their movement . because of their deployment point also ending up in the corner on the dirt road. it meant there was also a slight traffic jam until the right cards were drawn, but by that time 2 units of confederate infantry had worked their way up toward the ford (which was the unions only route over the rapidan river.
the confederates also had a unit of skirmishers which started on top of tan yard hill, they had made the most of the jamming up of federal forces on the road by inflicting a few early casualties on the union cavalry.
In the following few turns the unions managed to get a few shots off with their artillery piece to soften up the top of the hill. which also served as support for a unit of infantry that were planning on charging the confederates position on the top.
after a round of fisticuffs the unions sent the skirmishers packing. but with severe consequences as the rebs had 2 units advancing up the hill in support. which then forced the union regiment to withdraw at a hastily pace.
whilst all the action was happening on the hill the union forces had amassed just this side of the ford with 2 units of zouaves combining and presenting arms, which led to many casualties on the 2 units of rebs sprinting in line formation down the main dirt road. through some kind of luck!.... the draw meant that the 2 units had time to recover from all the points of shock that was dealt to them.
meanwhile as a bit sideshow to the main fight. on the other side of the lake a unit of skirmishers from each side were having a little duel. without any real outcome.
In the end the rebs still had control of tan yard hill but we knew that if we had time for a real outcome the union forces probably would of ran wild across the field and consumed everything...well maybe not that bad, but they would of won.
So the planning starts for the next scenario which will see the rebs defending a series of fence lines and earthworks, whist the federals mount in strength after gaining time to allow the rest of their forces to cross the river. should be interesting.
