Maybe a little late but I can recommend Irfanview. It's a nice and compact picture viewer with filters etc pp. for free for private use.
It is possible to batch convert picture (resizing ....)

I think it's also a good idea to glue newspaper posters along a wall with headlines and news of in-game occurrences, so the scenery is more directly related to what the players have done in previous games! ;)
