Game of Thrones on the table top

So I'm sitting here bored at work and I started thinking about how much fun it would be to play out some of the action in Westros on the table top. What is everyone's opinion on what era best represents the setting (say from the "present" period of the books back 100 or so years)?

Looking over the artwork and the costumes from the show itself it seems like the knights are all wearing plate armor of one kind or another, while the infantry seem to have a lot more variation (will heavily armored and uniform  Lannister guardsmen contrasting ragged peasant levies).

I'd also be interested to hear your opinions on regional differences. A man at arms from the north is going to look a lot different from a Dornish knight.

Also, I'd love to see pictures if any ones done up some figs for games.
