Suggestions for a gaming table
« on: September 30, 2016, 09:09:34 AM »
Hi,

I'll be hopefully moving house soon and at the new place I will have those greatest of things
My own dedicated gaming room!

So I'm after an appropriate table
I know I could get a custom on from the likes of Geeknson http://www.geeknson.com/
but they are quite pricey

I do Board and war gaming so something that would work for both

either 6x4 foot or the ability to become that big (but not much bigger otherwise it wont fit in the space)

oh and UK based

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Andy

I picked up a couple of folding tables from Amazon - link

They're 6' x 2.5', so two of them together will give you 6' x 5' (or 12' x 2.5' if that's your thing o_o)

They're pretty sturdy, and I could lie on them without any problems (again, if that's your thing lol)

I got three folding tables - plastic tops, folding metal legs.  I went for 4x2ft tables, as we can play boardgames or skirmishes on one, bigger games on 4x4 using two, and 6x4 games using all three.  I can just fit three tables and some gamers into my gaming room :)

When they're not in use, they fold away very neatly against a wall, as the three stacked together are 2x2ft and only 1ft deep.  So I get the room back to use as my office.  As zemjw says, they take a ridiculous amount of weight.

Can use them for painting and building scenery as well, or take them to local clubs in the boot of the car.  Very flexible.

I went through eBay for mine.

Top tip - buy everything you need in one go, as not all tables are precisely the same height.  You may not be able to get them from the same supplier later on, or they may have batches from a different producer.

If you can have a permanent table, go that route. It's  easier and sturdier than a storable table. It's pretty easy to build a simple frame topped with plywood. Another option is to use cheap half height shelves to make a pedestal base and put a plywood top on it. Here's a picture of my old 6'x8' setup.

This also gives you bonus storage. :)

Edit: Blogger isn't letting me embed the picture. Here's a link to my old blog post I grabbed the picture from. http://billwerks.blogspot.com/2009/02/workbench.html

I'd agree with the purpose built table.  It may be worth looking around for custom builders --- but ask if they do simple/basic stuff.  No need to get fancy.  I'd definitely make sure you have some good storage underneath the table.  That's something I normally miss out on using folding tables (which are great for their own purposes).  Do some studying and make sure you get the right height.  I like a  table I can stand at, accompanied by bar stools (so taller tables).  My folding tables obviously are not.  Ideally for gaming I prefer a table which comes up to my stomach or slightly more.  This means you can comfortably stand and game without slouching down (I'm 6'2" and low tables aren't amazing).  Throw in some stools for when you want to sit and voila.

Echo Elbows comment about height - absolutely crucial if you are standing and gaming.

My own table is about the same height as the kitchen work surfaces.

Good luck with what ever you choose

Plastic risers (search bed risers) solve the height problems - use them for minis, don't use them for board games.
