High Octane (a weekend skirmish) - first battle posted :)
« on: 09 October 2016, 10:25:10 PM »
Me and my "original" group have sadly parted ways years ago due to members (including myself) moving. Nostalgia can however be strong and as such I trie to organize a gaming weekends in which an old favourites are be revisited. Back in the days, we enjoyed a lot of Combat Zone, Necromunda, Blood Bowl and or own mix called high Octane.

we already had a Necromunda weekend last year, but I almost took no pictures. This year, we played High Octane and I tried to take a few more pictures.

I will write up a short story, including pictures, and post it in several chapters.

But just to wet your appetite a bit, here are some teaser pictures, just to give an idea of what will be coming to you:

Chapter 1 - Racing through the Desert:

Chapter 2 - looking for scrap:

Chapter 3 - Endgame:

Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

Before the first game, all players got a general introduction:

Lights in the sky

In the holy books, it stated that before there was light, there was darkness. Light came first from god, and then was made by man as well. The books however not indicate that the darkness would return.

After the bombs had fallen, light soon faded. electronics were fried due to EMPs and the atmosphere was filled with dust. Fire and simple man made light did still exsist, but the sky was utter darkness for a long time. It was said that God had left humanity after the war.

Still, there was some light, or rather "The Glow". The Glow could be found at the sites where the bombs had fallen, often locations that according to the Elders were big cities. Places were technology was at it's peak and life was beautifull. People have travelled to the glow for years, but few returned, and those that did often dead with a horrible wasting sickness. Stories circulated about improbable creatures and large ruins; Stories filled with wonders.

In the last years, the glow has dimmed somewhat and those location are now often referred to as the afterglow. Due to the risks, travel into these regions almost doesn't take place.

A few days ago, however, lights have been spotted in the sky. Lights that are moving towards the center of the afterglow. This can only be the ancient technology known as flight, a technology deemed lost. The group that controls this will be the strongest in the region. Your group will need to either control it, contain it, or destoy it.

You as a group leader have to put together a small band of hardy warriors (and maybe some enthausiastic youths) to do this!

The Race

During the trip towards the afterglow, the lights in the sky are seen almost every night. Tonight however somethig special happens. One of the lights blinks or flickers. You pay attention to the light and it also seems to lose altitude.

A quick descision has been made and your team starts following the light. If this flying machine falls from the sky, you want to claim it for your group! Close to the morning the lights are pretty far away and barely visible, though obiously still travelling in a straight line. The only way to follow the trail is to be in a direct line behind that path that it travels and hopefully be there if or rather when the craft will crash.

You immediatly notice that your groups was not the only one with this idea and rivals are soon seen on the horizon, closing in. Either race away from them, or destroy them, the choice is yours!

During the first scenario, four groups started at the table edge. The game is a rolling road (meaning that the table will move back 6" every turn and vehicles can fall of the table (or rather out of the race). The winner of the game would be the two factions that manage be either the last two standing, or the first two the manage to get 50+% of their models of the table on the far side.

All teams start at the edge:

A silent onlooker looks at the race from afar:

Before going to bed, he can can see that some savages seem to have a head start, that a Survivor quad is also making a run for it, but also that posse that calls itself "The Law"  is following closely.

One more trust too many, and The Law sees it's main truck spin out of control.

The Boat, a creation from the savages was hit in the flank, but not stopped and actually goes full speed ahead afterwards, aiming at the trike of the Eco Punkers.

It does not look good for the trike!

Somehow, the trike only suffers minor damage and the boat continues it's ramapge, just missing the Survivors quad and accidentely ramming one of their own vehicles.

Here seen from the other side, also showing the recycling truck of the Eco-Punkers and the Van of the civilians. If you listen carefully, you can here someone shout:" I pity the fool who rams my van!"

Luckily the Savages their car only get pushed in the right direction.

The Quad Survivor follows closely:

In the distance the SWAT from the LAW can be seen disembarking, as their transport is immobilized. Apperently, the encounter with the boat was a bit too much for it.

Immediatly they take aim on the Eco-Punker trike and manage to take it out of action.

On the other side of the battlefield, the survivors have a big truck and the van making a break for it, while the Eco-Punkers have troubles finding their way.

While the Quad of the survivors was the first vehicle to leave the table, the savages are the first that manage to get 50+% off table, albeit the boat spinning once more just before leaving the table due to fire from the LAW patrol car.

The Eco-punker did not manage to catch up and the survivors yellow truck and the savages get more vehicles of table:

These last two win this game
