Looking for a large satellite dish in 28mm size
« on: October 19, 2016, 10:09:25 AM »
Anyone know of scenery ranges that contain a large satellite dish?
I am aware of several small ones but am looking for something that would be a 4m or 5m dish in scale

The only one I found is by Quantum Gothic which is OK but a bit "steampunk" looking for my taste. I also know Micro Art do an entire radar building but I only want the dish & mounting.

How about a large Lego one? Cheap, and the biggest ones would be about the right size...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Four metre would be at least six inches, probably more, right? Whoops, think I got the divisor backwards.  :o

How about a large styrofoam or PS ball, or even half sphere. I assume you don't want it near perpendicular on the sides, but you take a really large ball and slice a piece off.

It's sometimes worth checking out your local £ shops to see if they have a toy with one. I have often seen them in sets with toy soldiers etc.

These "6 x 6" Lego ones are about 50mm in diameter:

When buying Lego I would recommend BrickLink.com prices there are about 10% of those on eBay.

Following on from YPU suggestion of BrickLink, a quick search for 'dish' provides quite a few options:

Not sure most of the suggestions would work without additions.

The point of a satellite dish is for radio waves arriving across a relatively large area to hit the large dish surface and be reflected back so that they concentrate on a receiver, which is at the end of a pole in the middle.  So all those frame-only models would need to be covered, and a receiver added.
Back from the dead, almost.

Most of the lego dishes are fully surfaced, the one used as an example is frame one though.

Here's an MDF one from Terrakami, but at 25cm it might be too large for what your'e looking for:

3d print it up. You model it and I will print one up for you.

I actually tried to print a radio telescope dish with a diameter of 100mm and found that the overhangs toward the center of a dish with the same parabola as modern dishes was too much to print.  I found I had to distort the shape closer to spherical which looked pretty goofy.
