Dropfleet - a Scourge medium cruiser.
« on: October 23, 2016, 06:59:32 PM »
Hello. So I picked up the starter for DFC. The rules sounded really fun and different from what I usually play, and the models looked awesome. I've started painting up the Scourge side first, and I've previously found that posting my progress here helps keep me at it so to speak. So without further ado... my first ship and scheme test, a Harpy

Lovely.  The sculpts for that game are amazingly detailed, and you've done a nice job bringing it out.

Great colours.
One of those games I knew I'd get into as soon as I heard about it.

Looking forward to see more

Nice job, and I really dislike the Scourge (so much so that it kept me from buying the main boxed game).

Lovely paint on a weirdly beautiful miniature.

The scourge ships remind me of those pictures that move when you look at them... but only in your mind :o

I look forward to seeing more :)

Yeah, I wasn't  a fan of the dropzone scourge's look (though it's growing on me), but the ships were an instant hit with me.
They're lovely and creepy at the same time.

Beautifully done. Not the colours I would have thought, of but they really work.

Agreed,  I think the DzC figs miss for me because they're not quite alien enough, at least the smaller tanks and APCs.  The big stuff and the walkers are better/weirder, although some of the dropship designs are a little too clumsy looking for my tastes.  Then again, most of that clumsiness comes from being designed to carry the AFVs that I don't like much in the first place.

The ships, OTOH, are gorgeous, and that paint job on the Ifrit really looks great.

Just out of curiosity, how modular/versatile are those plastics?  How many different stock frigate and cruiser classes can be built with them, and is there much potential for putting them together in different non-canonical configurations?  I've looked at the sprues in various unboxing videos but don't have a good feel for how much variation you can achieve.

For the Scourge I'd say you can build a single cruiser of everyone of the stock variants and I believe you can build a few non stock ones too, mainly lights. As for the frigates thats harder due to the sculpt, each frigate being three parts (main body and 'wings'). So you would need some more elaborate converting for those.

Thanks, helpful.  I'm looking at the figs partly for other games (Full Thrust, Starmada, A Sky Full of Ships) and partly as just modeling projects.

How are the bases?  I've heard grumbles that they're too hard to turn and they certainly look fiddly to twist during play without bumping figs, especially when multiple models have clumped up in a scrum.  The demo game vids I've watched have had some fairly silly spaceship pile-ups, at least one of which ended in a catastrophic ship explosion that cleared the field.  Seems like a questionable design decision, especially given Chambers experience with the void shield tracker bases on the old Epic figs (which were also a royal PITA to turn in play).  If they wanted to have twisty-dial components for tracking various statuses something more like X-Wing's separate dial might have been a better idea.

Put me in the 'not my cuppa' line, but do have to admit your PJ's are so nice, that....  ;)

Has anyone done an AAR that actually has game play in it? Don't know much about the rules.

Doug
