Clear colored paint to mark soldiers
« on: October 30, 2016, 02:15:15 AM »
Thinking about how to mark the mixed weapons in the 15mm Darkest Star Venturian and I saw the 6 colors of "clear" paint Reaper Miniatures has available.  The future soldiers should have a linkage between their integral computers in their helmets and their weapons so the proper Heads Up Display (HUD) shows on their visor for targeting.

I was thinking of five colors for the 5 weapon types - Gauss Rifle, Advanced Combat Rifle, Particle Accelerator Rifle, Particle Accelerator Carbine (think SMG,) and Plasma Rifle.  That even leaves one color for specialists and command possibly.

Should I paint over the primed (white, black, grey, red?) metal?  Over Silver or Gold Metallic? Over bare metal?

Who has done this before and what technique works best?

Not really sure what you are doing but I have use Tamyia clear smoke for armor and the clear red is nice also.  For armor I use a wire brush and a tool to burnish the metal then apply the clear smoke paint (no primer)

I've used the GW washes over both white and metallic silver in the past. I imagine the GW wash and the clear paints are fairly similar.

It works over both, but gives different effects - I'd think over a metallic colour would work better for weapons, or perhaps over light grey.

A friend used the Tamia clear red over a white (well dried) undercoat, this gave a wonderful bright scarlet for his AWI British redcoats.

Pardon the lack clarity, I was thinking of applying the clear colors over the visor as an identification of the weapon linked to the HUD because someone unaccustomed to the Darkest Star 15mm figures might need a visual clue for the weapon the figure was armed with without picking up the figure to look at the weapon.

Could work on the related Denizen 25mm figures too.

Something like purple for Plasma Gun, Green for Gauss Rifle, etc. would provide identification.
