What scifi setting for Rogue Stars will you use?
« on: November 13, 2016, 04:46:03 PM »
     To Rogue Star Gamers:

When the game is released what setting will you be using for gaming it?

      1. The official Rogue Stars setting

      2. One from your favorite science fiction movie/TV series.

      3. One of your favorite Board Game/RPG/ Miniatures settings

       4. Or Create your own game universe.

As with everything else I do, a mix of it all.

I find it the most fun to "create" your own vague universe to set games in, but stealing anything neat from other settings and stories and giving it your own spin. One shouldn't be constrained in their gaming by established narratives, I feel, and I find that the best backgrounds are those that evolve organically from a few core ideas through play and collecting.

To start off with, I'll be trying to put together a few ramshackle colony shacks to suggest a far off space frontier town. Where I go from there depends on how much the game grabs me, but I have some vague scenario ideas for alien attacks and Star-Imperial enforcer crack-downs.

I'm planning on doing some retro Pulp Sci-fi with my Counterblast figs and some Firefly type games with a mix of Copplestone Future Wars Scavengers and the human Rogue Stars figs.

I fancy (loosely) basing mine on the Firefly series. I will still feel free to nick ideas from just about anywhere.

I call my universe 'Scum and Villainy', and as you might ave guessed it is inspired partly by the denizens of Mos Eisely, but also very much by the Firefly/ Serenity world.

In the Scum and Villainy universe Earth has been destroyed by an alien race during a brutal war. Humanity exists on the outskirts of other alien civilisations, as refugees, or as rogues and smugglers. There are huge fleets of human refugee ships that travel through space looking for somewhere where the people can resettle. Some enlighten alien races have accepted small number of human refugees, but they tend to be employed in menial jobs, or housed in orbiting camps. Other humans scrape out existences employed as asteroid miners,  scavengers or other dangerous occupations. It's a tough universe for to be a human in, but I feel it also says something of the strength of the human character.

I use figures from any manufacturer so long as they conform to a certain aesthetic that I feel fits the bill. There is no guys with power armour and massive heavy weapons that look like they could shoot down an orbiting space ship. Its guys in civilian clothes with may be a pistol or a carbine. I have used scifi figures, but also figures form Old West and even historical figures like crusaders. anything that feels right to me.

For me initially, I'm looking at Judge Dredd and (if the rules lend themselves) some sort of Star Trek type game.

Firefly/Star Wars type games, although set on the fringes of places, rather than anywhere too shiney :D

There will be plenty of aliens running around the place as well, not just those pesky humans.

I am looking forward to these rules. I started to jot down notes for a background a year or so ago, but ran out of steam/enthusiasm. These rules are tempting me to go back and revisit the setting. Hopefully they'll live up to my expectations.

I hope to use it in our club's loose homebrew setting, the Galactic Frontier.

It's a wide enough universe to encompass most of our sci-fi gaming.

If we end up liking it, I'd like to try it in an Inquisitor/40k setting as well.

Not settled yet, but I have an itch to do something in Ground Zero Games' Tuffleyverse setting.  Maybe on an Outrim human colony with some local alien presence, Phalons or Crusties or Xarr?

If the "official" universe looks nice I'll probably start there, and develop my own version from that basis.

Will be tempted to see if I could do an X-COM style game with it. Beats finishing off my old half baked ideas  lol

Rob_bresnen, that sounds like a great setting, I liked your ideas very much!  ;)
