Thank you, gentlemen  :D

A bit more work today, refining of the body and tail plus bulking out of the head and legs:

I've made the head a bit more snake-like than in the TV series, with a more prominent skull. I think I prefer it but I might change my mind.

Next steps will be the usual cutting back, sanding and then maybe starting on the wings.

Edit: just though I'd add this extra image as I really like the shadow on the wall to the right!

Some more thoughts on flight.

First up though, yesterday's work has been carved and sanded. Which has been great, except I was heavily doped-up yesterday and in my 'confusion' apparently applied the Milliput to the lower legs without actually mixing it. So off it came today, to be reapplied later. An idiot am I.  :)  :o

Anyways, being at the wing stage really requires me to settle on an angle of flight so I've roughly bent the brass rod on the flight stand I'd made for the biplane (and yes, no doubt at some point I'll regret doing that) to experiment with a forward cantilever (and by forward, I mean that the balancing weight is in front of the arm rather than to its rear).

The plan is to make the arm out of clear acrylic rod but this gives a rough idea, flying straight and true:

And here it is rotated to sweep to port:

As I'm not too doped-up today the soldering iron is readied to work on the wings  ;) :D

Cheers Colin

I'm sketching out a shape then I'll use that as a template to solder wires for the limbs within the wings. Then tissue paper, super glue and GS over. The existing wires will be used to rest the wings on while they set into the body.

Thanks Matt. Appreciated.  ;) :)

So, a wing sketched out and rested in position:

As can be seen, I need to square off the shoulders, which will also allow me to bulk out the chest a tad more, as befitting fiery lungs.

Size-wise, the model looks like it'll come out at 28cm long by 33cm wide, so if fully stretched out lengthwise about 33cm by 33cm, which at 1/56 comes out at about 19m.

Thanks for the interest  :D

You are mad Hammers!  lol

Update on the wings to show the construction.

Five twisted wires, laid out against the template, then soldered at the turns to secure them into position:

Rather than covering with tissue paper, it suddenly occurred to me there was a shortcut - simply gluing the wires to the template paper:

The paper is on top of a packing tape surface, as that won't take the superglue. I'll gradually remove masking tape and add more superglue, until the entire wing is covered and I can cut it out.

Edit: forgot to say, the copper wire used throughout is 0.6mm dia (I bought a 20m spool about 8 years ago, thinking that will be useful for something).

Third and final update of the day.

Wings were finished and cut out then given a final wash of superglue:

It transpired that I didn't need the old wires to support the new wings and so cut them away. The wings were superglued into a tube that was superglued into a hole drilled through the body:

After the superglue had dried, it was just a matter of adding more Milliput (including the legs, again) ahead of carving and sanding tomorrow. Anyways it flies!:

I'm so impressed but also so jealous  ;D

He/she really has a pointy face, I can imagine that being difficult when adding the teeth, hope it won't though

A scorcher Andy, because it breathes fire!  :D

Thanks folks.  Once I've tidied up the basic shape of the legs progress will slow considerably, as everything will be skinned with GS, which will be a tad awkward to manage due to the unwieldy shape. I'll probably widen the nose at that time but I've left it narrow as I might just add dentures in the form of teeth cut into a strip of plasticard. Not 100% sure though as am learning as I go along.  :)

Looking good. Itching to see more... either that or the kids chicken pox are making me feel itchy. (Seriously looking forward to seeing the end of this though)
