HELP! How does one paint Zulu's skin?
« on: 22 February 2009, 03:44:24 PM »
Please help a rank beginner to paint Zulus in a convincing manner!

I guess that there are tutorials on the net somewhere

Thanks

Thanks to asking a similar question on this forum I use a very dark brown base coat (currently using Coat D'Arms Negro) and then highlight by adding Ivory.

I've had good luck doing African/Negro skin with regular (Caucasian/pinkish) flesh paint, then a couple coats of Burnt Umber wash over it.

Gives a very nice shade - I'll try and get some closeups done in good light sometime soon of a couple 28mm sailors done this way.

One of the sailors in my LPL3 Round 3 entry ("Merchant Sailors") is one of the finally completed Negro sailors I mentioned here months ago. Photo over on the LPL3 thread.

I'll get a closeup or two later this week when I'm photographing the next LPL3 round, and put them up here.

I've had some quite nice effects using black or very dark brown base and highlighting up to something like GW Dark Flesh and then adding a little bleached bone or ivory to the dark flesh for a final highlight.

I used that for 20mm, another option is to work up and use the GW Calthyun (not sure of exact word) foundation for the highlights with an umber wash

My own recipe is

Black undercoat
GW Bestial Brown basecoat
Brown ink wash
Bestial Brown highlight
Bestial Brown and Bronzed Flesh (2:1) final highlight

The final highlight can often look a little light, but miraculously it all comes together under the varnish.

I'd show you some pictures, but Photobucket appears to be experiencing some difficulty for some reason.  >:(

Finally seems to be working again, so as promised some examples of my negro skin:

All done to the same recipe, more or less. There may be some variation in the final highlight.

Hey nice work Bob
The guys with the shields look like something out of Tintin in the Congo! Where do the figures come from?

Cheers.  :)

Those little guys are Kallistra pygmies (listed under 28mm Fantasy).

I have far too many of them to be sensible.
