How to make torn robes?

Hi guys,

I'm wanting to make some robes in 28mm scale, but I'm not really impressed with how they look when making them out of GS....too thick.

I've looked online at an the usual places, but most of it's pretty basic i.e. roll out GS thin on baking paper etcetera.

Could anyone recommend a tutorial for making them out of say paper, tin, plastic? I need to be able to flex it after making it too.

Maybe other options but I guess regards keeping thickness down to minimum the paper/glue method might be the most suitable to modify to your current needs?

I often add cloaks and similar suggestions of cloth using paper and superglue, though I usually also skin it with GS for extra detail.

The tissue and super glue sounds promising.

Do you know how I can create realistic tears in it? Should I do that before or after adding the super glue?

I've used tissue paper and pva for fabric before, the neat thing about tissue paper is you can fold it to the thickness needed.

I'd recommend just PVA as it's quite a forgiving technique as it takes a while to dry, plenty of time to add folds, change your mind. For the tearing you'll just have to play around with a few test pieces. I'd be tempted to do it just before the PVA fully dries, or possibly  after and then add more PVA.

Superglue will work, but you'd have to move quick, the advantage is paper doped with superglue is quite tough. You'd have to tear before the superglue I'd imagine, you'd get a better look to it.

What about using PVA at the sculpting stage and then sealing with thin superglue? Would that be the best of both worlds, or would it just run off the PVA? I mix them in terrain sometimes to solid effect, but that's before either of them dry.

I think you may have answered your own question about adding super glue to the robes. But I'm intrigued about you terrain application. Could you elaborate on it a bit more please?

I've seen people use thin copper or brass sheet in the same way they make banners out of it.
I've also seen good results from tissue paper , shaped with water then set with super glue.

I think you may have answered your own question about adding super glue to the robes. But I'm intrigued about you terrain application. Could you elaborate on it a bit more please?

I use PVA quite heavily for basing, but when I add big stones or vehicles to a base, I always put a little superglue on it before it hits the PVA (which is often mixed with polyfilla and/or sand). It sort of curdles with the wood glue and makes for a stronger bond than just relying on the PVA.
