OK, so the razor blade 'pods' didn't look right (they have no sharp edges after painting - you cynics) and having made something else I think I know why (other than the resemblance to razor pods) - basically they look like well made and painted crap. But why?

Anyway, this time, not only do I think I've done better, I'm not stopping for applause because this statement is debatable on several grounds, I think I've sussed the X-Wing variable.

OOOOH!

Do I know the secret?

If you believe that I do you are a cretin, but I think I'm on the right lines. It's the colour of stuff!

Very nice James, and a bit of a departure for the Italian Wars

Nice work - I like both the pods and the satellites

Those came out nicely.  Not so sure about them in Star Wars, but they'd be right at home in Atomic Rocket or any of a variety of 60s Italian scifi films (Wild Wild Planet, Green Slime).

The razor pods look fine to me, although I guess you could add some other bits (scrap plastic, or leftover parts from another kit) to disguise their origins a bit.
