Assembling multipart TAG/WK dwarfs
« on: 24 February 2017, 06:12:18 AM »
Hi!

Last year I bought quite a few great looking dwarfs from TAG/WK. In the past the only multipart figures I've painted were plastic. For big plastic miniatures I used to do a bit of pinning, even though I hate the process of that. For bigger metal miniatures I'm sure I would need to pin, but do you pin the multipart TAG/WK dwarfs?

I haven't pinned any either. For the most part, they have large enough surfaces to for the glue to get a good grip, combined with the pegs and indentations that are cast on. Sometimes it may help to add a little putty to the neckstump (or inside the head cavity) with the separate heads to make a perfect seal.

Of course, I try to avoid dropping my painted figures or put them loose in boxes to rattle around, so I guess it depends what you plan to do with them.  ;D

They are Dwarfs. Now, what would we do with them ( hell, even Gimli told Aragorn to do so...  lol )...

Well, that will save me quite a bit of time then :D

Opened the first blisters to start cleaning the mold lines. They're great casts and the faces are marvelous. Expect a project log in the near future. 8)

Noticed that they come with those diagonal bases. Ranked up that looks a bit weird, not really sure what the front is. Linear slotted bases used to be available on the evilbay, but it seems with the passing of WFB so have the linear slotted bases. Except someone who sells 100 for 45 pounds. :o

So, what basing options are there left, preferably that allow for a nice ranked up look. At the moment I don't play any miniature games anymore but would love to be able to play multiple systems when I meet some other players in the nearby.

I don't have the Dwarfs but I do have some WK's foot knights, and have recently started prepping.

I'm basing them on 20mm square slotta.  I've had the bases for ages and most have the diagonal slot.  For me this is not a problem as there are two options to have the figure "front-facing"

1.  Snip off the metal tab and pin the miniature to the base, filling the slot with anything suitable.
2.  And this is what I'm doing - snip the metal tab from one foot, so it's "free", attached to only one foot.  Carefully twist this, ensuring you don't damage the foot/ankle until you can place the metal tab into the diagonal slot, and have the miniature facing any way you like.

I'm a heretic and used round slotta bases, added more to these and have a dozen mounted knights in the lead pile :)

The Vertically Challenged One I have from White Knight not only were a delight to paint; they assembled without pinning in fine fashion.
Mine are mounted on 1" wooden circles & some slightly larger wooden ovals. Here's a Group Shot of The Blessed Order of the Gooey Death:

Your painting is very inspirational! Thanks for showing it!

I tried option two, but I'm not careful enough and a tab broke off. So I guess pinning it is.

You can still use the tab to fill the slot on the base though.   ;)

For metal parts, I use a knife to score the contact surfaces several times before I glue them. I think that that the small cuts give the superglue some extra "grip" and makes the bond more solid.

@thorimm

I had this issue recently with some old GW Bretonnians. I ended up cutting a new straight slot in the diagonal slotted base. Worked a treat. I used an original base to get the position right and wedged a bit of green stuff underneath to support the tab when everything was in place. After one or two I could convert a base in under a minute.
Snip away the 'walls' of the diagonal slot on the underside of the base with side cutters and then just cut through from the top and tidy up. It's very soft plastic. You could put some paint on the bottom of the figures tab and use that to mark position and width of your new slot if you are a bit dedicated.
