Over the past few years I have been looking at the 2nd Anglo-Boer War as a project I would like to take on. I have looked at several different rule sets, but until now they have not seemed right, so the project has never taken off. The release of The Men Who Would Be Kings has changed that, since it is generic enough so that I can tweak the rules.
This will be a 28mm project.
For Imperial troops I have decided to go for Studio Miniatures Northwest Frontier Brits. They look to be in the correct uniform and also have the correct Lee-Metford rifle.
I am however not sure on which minis to use for the Boers though. Truth be told I am not to particular about whether their weapons are Mausers or not, no one will notice 2-3 feet away. But If I look at those listed as being for the 2nd Anglo-Boer War there are three companies: Old Glory, Wargames Foundry and Redoubt.
I have heard lots of good things about Old Glory's range, but I am unsure about their size as they are listed as 25mm, so will they look small compared to the Imperial Troops?
Wargames Foundry's Boers I am quite sure are too small.
When it comes to Redoubt I have read that they are too chunky, but also that they fit nicely with other ranges (Empress, BTD etc.), so I really have no idea about their size. Don't know anything about the quality of the sculpts either.
If I look past the minis specifically for the 2nd Anglo-Boer War a lot of companies carry Boers - Empress, North Star, Black Tree Designs etc. As I really don't mind them not having Mauser rifles one of them, perhaps makes some of these ranges better. Certainly Empress and North Star's Boers look great, not sure about BTD as the pictures on their site are very small.
So what would you guys suggest? And if anyone have images of some of the different ranges next to each other please post them.
