Hoplites and Iberians
« on: 27 March 2017, 05:01:00 PM »
I've just received some Theban hoplites from Victrix and was wondering if there was any historical precedent for using  them against some Iberians from the same manufacturer someone else at the club has? Not too worried about pinpoint historical accuracy in regards to uniform/ equipment etc but I'm interested in giving any games we play a historical background
Thanks for any suggestions

Using the Greeks as carthaginians, or as citizens of any of the western mediterranean Greek Colonies (sicily, Southern France, and Spain had colonies). This map may be of Use

Use the thebans as sicilian hoplites and the iberians as they are, being mercenaries of carthage - the setting is the 1st Punic War.

Sicillian Greeks sounds like a good option. Has anyone got any simple introductions to the forces of the sicillian Greeks?

The core of the army is hoplites, with varying quality. Each tyrant would have had a bodyguard of hoplites, probably foreigners that had no ambition in Syracuse (if we take Syracuse as an example).

Mercenaries were recruited and included light infantry from southern italy, tarentine light cavalry and even non-greek like iberians. Even cretan archers fit.

If you are fighting Greek western Mediterranean colonies VS Iberians  then local mercenaries would probably be fighting on both sides. Celts, Celtberians, & even Gaulic javelins or slings or light horse might be employed. Maybe even some Baeleric slings.
