The Victrix figure looks like a Rolls-Royce between a couple of old Ford Cortinas...

People might still moan about plastic figures, and I'm quick enough to criticise the ones who get it wrong with poor sculpting and stingy components. But my God, when they get it right, like this, you'd have to be blind to not realise what a massive step up in quality it represents compared with the typical metal figure.

Seriously. I bought a couple boxes of the Warlord Romans and they were so disappointing it killed my interest in the entire project. I had really liked Victrix's Republican Romans, but wasn't looking at doing that period. On first look, I really love those models. And I didn't need a new project right now.

We're getting so many great kits these days, and they are in plastic which makes it so much easier to customize and convert unique pieces. If I had unlimited time and money, I'd need unlimited space because I'd just never run out of conversion and period projects. Stuff I would have never considered a few years ago just because the base kits didn't exist.

Of course, now I'm kicking myself for not selling off the unused Warlord figures on EBay before this kit was released.

I must confess that I was one of those who was unimpressed when I first saw the Victrix Romans.
But it would be stupid of me not to say how impressed I am by those painted examples above.
Not just because the quality of the painting, which is spot on, but also because the models themselves are really good.
Victrix should ask you if they could use those images in their promotional material.

Well, you saved me some time there - was about to say pretty much precisely that. The sculpts looked alright, but are a lot more appealing after having seen these. Even more looking forward to auxiliaries and barbarians now.

Picked up mine yesterday and they are very nice indeed. Little disappointed to find some minor damage to the command frame though. An Optio staff broken and the Praetorian Signum bent out of shape. Not enough to ask for a replacement but still annoying. Wish they would go back to using boxes again rather than zip bags.

Other than that though they really are great figures, looking forward to see how they expand the range.

The plastic bag packaging is a bad idea. I purchased some Spanish that were also damaged. Victrix needs to return to boxes. The figures may be 1st class, but the bags look 2nd class.

But in the end the (hopefully undamaged) content is what really matters too me

Another cracker...

I think the reason they look so good is because they look so damned businesslike... I used to have a Rick Scollins print of a Roman legionary. Don't know where it went along the way, but it was a great illustration. Had the same gritty, professional, uncompromising quality that these have...

Now just waiting with baited breath for the eagle bearers...
