Guns for trains (new pics Sep. 15, 2011)
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:23:02 PM »
So I'm rounding out my VSF Confederates with a pair of walking locomotives.  I need to add rivets and guns before painting.

My question now is:  What would be a plausible heavy weapon to add to them?  These are single-man vehicles, so whatever it is needs to be plausibly self-loading.

Also I do not actually own any VSFy heavy weapons - these would have to be scratchbuilt.

Your input is solicited and appreciated.

Though I can't offer a weapon suggestion, those are genius. Blimey.

Is that a golf tee for a smokestack?  lol
How about a Gatling gun or some multi barrelled revolving gun? ( Should be easy enough to scratchbuild)

Marvellous work! A steam powered gatling gun on the roof / underside would work......

Or a Hotchkiss Revolving cannon mounted on a bracket on the side? You could link it to the boiler to be steam powered.

These are inspired, regardless of what weapons you put on it.  :-*

Though I'm no VSF-buff, these are fun to look at.

IMO the weight of those boilers and the position of the connection point with the legs would make the whole thing topple forward, so I would definitly add large heavy stuff as far aft as possible e.g. heavy guns with large breach blocks protruding from the rear.

a couple of questions come to mind :
1. where do you stock your coal ? it is a steam engine after all. (a walking cart behind the engine maybe)
2. Have you considered a multiped vehicle. It would make more sense (although you'd probably end up with gigantic vehicles)

Yes, some kind of rear mount that aims forward underneath the body would work. Seconding the suggestion for a gatling gun of some variety. The rear mount would allow plausible access for a driver to reload it.

You can maybe trim the cowcatchers to allow for the gun (those cowcatchers are also a bit off compared to the rest of the model anyway - they're too crude and rounded). Instead, maybe you can add a small L-shaped drop-down guard plate (like this).

Otherwise, these are hilarious good fun.  :D

I don't have anyother suggestions for guns, but I look forward to seeing this project progress.

1: Valid point, but you're thinking way too hard about the practicality.
2.  I tried that, but decided I liked the bipedal ones.

I figure these are straight out of Deadlands, so there's a lot of complicated weird science and ghost rock going on inside that boiler.  It works, but the handwavium matrices have to be kept properly aligned.

All this time I had the feeling I was forgetting something. Now I remember : handwavium matrices, ofcourse  lol

I made this walker about ten years ago from a cheap plastic O guage train cutting short the engine and adding a gun below the engine with a US Naval fig from the 1860s manning a gatling gun.

I decided to go with a simple cannon from mecha arms, and reporpoised the shoulder as an ammunition hopper.  The steam feeds are safely internal where I don't have to model them.

Epoxy rivets added, primer sprayed, and now I have to figure out how to paint non-metallic worn black steel.
