Moongrunt Discussion
« on: August 10, 2016, 12:22:46 PM »
What is Moongrunt?

Not much beyond a cool name and a line of figures from Ground Zero Games

https://shop.groundzerogames.co.uk/moongrunt.html

But it is an idea, and that idea is that men shooting at each other while wearing bulky space suits is pretty sweet

What we know is that the US Marine Corps Extra-Planetary Expeditionary Force Luna are shooting it out with the Chinese Luna Troops of the People's Liberation Army Space Force

So what are the USMCEPEFL and the PLASF fighting over? What rules would people use to adjudicate their heroics and what inspirational material does all this bring to people's mind?

Just, jknow, Chat Moongrunt

Essential viewing includes

The space bits from Call of Duty: Ghosts

And the space battle from Moonraker

I've got a theoretical ongoing MOONGRUNT project (there's a post on here and my blog) but it's faltered a bit.

Mine might be a bit more futuristic than the majority of the Moongrunt line, but that's cool. I was considering having them mostly armed with energy weapons that take a moment to charge (not automatic weapons), then using a blackpowder skirmish ruleset. Still might toy with this once I've done a bit more work.

I'm working on 6mm pretty heavily at the moment though, I'd quite like to do a 6mm version of MOONGRUNT too.

Ages ago somebody posted pictures of a VSF game played on a tiny planet. The planet was made from some sort of ball, soccer-sized. It was painted in magnetic paint, quite a thick layer. All models, in 15mm, were based on strong magnets. You can see where I am going with this right? The models stuck quite nicely to the planet, even upside down. It creates a very dynamic and interesting battlefield. I think the moongrunt figures have a lot of potential for a game like this.

There are several episodes of Gerry Anderson's UFO that completely take place on the moon. One actually has a sniper taking out someone inside their moonbase. In another, there is a large runaway Russian moon(monster)truck that has to be stopped before it collides with said moonbase. it is suggested that many countries have a (permanent) presence on the moon. In another episode, there's a full scale attack on S.H.A.D.O.'s moonbase, including AAA tanks in its defense.

Yet another one has S.HA.D.O. shooting down a UFO on the moon and one of the main protagonists ends up having to team up with the alien astronaut in order to survive the moon's harsh environment.

There's plenty of shooting done by bulky space-suit wearing soldiers for sure.

And for some reason, Apollo XIV resonates with me too, in regard to the proposed setting (maybe minus the beligerent alien rocks lol ); there is a  Russian lunar lander in there that would fit right in.

And wasn't there an episode of The Twilight Zone in which a wormhole opens up near the moon and the main character wants to steer his capsule into it to explore what's on the other side? On Earth, people want to stop him and a spaceborne contingent of French Foreign Legion troops is diverted from the moon to stop him. Granted; this last part was all suggested, as this entire engagement was only heard over the radio down on Earth in the control center, but still; FFL in space... :D

Clearly one thing they could be fighting over is a 1 : 4 : 9 monolith discovered in Tycho crater

I'm definitely thinking about transposing this project to 6mm too and using either Horizon Wars or maybe FiveCore Company Commander.

I thought about doing something like this in 28mm a month or two ago as I found my International Space Station model from uni and didn't really want to throw it away.

Also, I didn't fancy making a load of moon terrain boards so thought about doing it Mars (of which I have lots and lots and lots of terrain).

Still could be interested  :D

What 28mm options are there? Armed vaccsuits seem underrepresented.

Victory Force do a small range in 28mm:

http://www.victoryforce.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=VFM&Product_Code=006604C&Category_Code=sfpacks

Anyone know of any other options in 28mm?? There's also a pending set of rules for the Two Hour Wargames 5150 Star Army/Fringe Space setting that adds zero-G/low-gravity and hostile environment rules. I'll use those when they are ready.

Only a few to go on but I suppose it's a niche within a niche and quite possibly within another niche after that  lol

Still, given you can get Bertie Wooster with a Tommy Gun and a host of other bizarre stuff you would have thought *someone* would do a 'Neil Armstrong does the coolest thing any human has ever done' fig

--

You would only need like two sculpts of astronauts in Manned Maneuvering Units to do a space battle like the one in Moonraker

I guess they are actually wearing the same suit in different colours so you could just have different packs
