Return to Hyboria - now with added polycephaly!
« on: January 16, 2010, 06:27:07 PM »
Even if I did not do EM-4's stellar service (q.v.) justice (since it took me a week, albeit ill for a bit, to paint them), here's a number of the old Grenadier barbarians.

Lovely, old-fashioned models, without being ridiculous (although the swords seem to be the progenitors of the Celtos Cricket Bats). I hope to use them to re-kindle the "Hyboria" project I wanted to start back in 2007, when we ran the first LPL season.

Unfortunately, apart from buying the "Complete Chronicles of Conan: Centenary Edition" book and the "Conan the Barbarian" DVD, I don't have much of an idea where to start properly (although I'm positively enamored by the fact that every other story seems to feature a Lovecraftian horror of sorts!  :-*).

I think I´ll look out for suitable miniatures which tickle my fancy at the next few shows, and draw up some terrain concepts (that "steppe-ish" look of the Conan movies is rather nice).

Wonderful painting - I do like a nice Barbarian

If you are looking for inspiration have a look for the Savage Sword of Conan collections - anthologies of the 70's and 80's b+w comic magazines which closely follow REH's stories

The art is fantastic

I think Mr. Copplestone may have drawn some inspiration from here himself

have a look on Amazon, they are very good value for money
No dear, they are not toys, they are models

I'm loving the dude with the helmet, first picture, figure on the left. He's great.

Nice skin tones all around, makes me want to read some of my REH stories.

Very nice Chris. Good old Conan. I have all his books in a box in the loft somewhere  ;)

By the way, the brilliance of your English never ceases to amaze me... 'Progenitor' - bloody hell, most English people don't know what that means!  :)

Actually, it popped into my mind sometime this week, and I've been aching for a chance to use it in a posting! lol

I second the Savage Sword of Conan comics. I read them as a teenager and they're wonderfully inspirational. I head people have been playing Conan adventures using the Broadsword Adventures rules. I haven't seen those particular figures in a decade. You've certainly done them justice.

Nice painting on my favorite barbarians ever - definitely fit the Hyborian Age. I look forward to seeing what you have in mind with your Hyboria project and agree with the idea of using SSOC for visual inspiration.

If you need any info on anything Hyborian don't hesitate to PM me - I have been a Conan fan for over 30 years and have read all the stories several times at least!

Very nice Chris,

there is something amazing about the two of us ...
I also paint miniatures for adventures in the Hyborean Age at the moment.
I paint Turan soldiers. I already have finished Conan and some
other hero type figures. Soon I paint some dessert raiders from Conans time as a Kozaki leader.

Cheers

Here is my version - he's a bit old now and may need tarting up - but you can't deny he's a fantastic sculpt

I have the mounted units and the hero on the Sabretooth - wonderful models

I'll look them out and see if I can photo them
