I thought I would keep all my samurai work in one place for a change as I'll be starting to play some games in a week or two :D
The rules I'll be using are a Sharp Practise mod and I'll post them up when they've been finalised.
First off though I've got two finished seki-bune to show that will appear in a game soon.
The masts are demountable for ease of access (and clumsy fingers).

More to follow soon as I'm nearly finished re-basing a load of Sanada troops :)

Very nice tubs, mate.
A splendid finish on them.

And who have you roped into for this?
Is this a 'deal' for playing Texas with Mama...?
:D

Based the Sanada teppo (pronounced teh-poh), I've also added a couple to the Murakami clan and have a fair few more to finish off. The bune have the Murakami clan markings.

Lovely, mate.
Just lovely.
:-* 8) :-*
Like a lot of people, I imagine, Samurai were some of my first figure purchases back in the '80's, Dixons, of course.
I loved them then but was always put off of painting a serious number of them due to the complexity of the paintjob.
You are a brave man, sir.
:D
-
The ships (er...boats) are fantastic and I love the figures. The Shogun/Japan/Samurai thing is something that really appeals to me though I doubt I'd find any opponents to play with! Gorgeous work as usual.
-
Lovely stuff :-*
-
Wonderful work! Your Samurai figures are always great to see!
Also:
The rules I'll be using are a Sharp Practise mod and I'll post them up when they've been finalised.
:D :D Cannot wait! I was thinking of modding Sharp Practice (possibly my favourite rules) for Samurai one day, but as you're definitely an authority on the period I cannot wait to see what you've done.
-
Lovely work.
The sails look a little too flat - a suggestion of using handmade/textured painting for the next ones you make. I can see some pattern - not sure then if that is already the case or just something extra you printed on them (I understand it may just be the photography).
-
They look fantastic mate. Will be following with interest.
-
Thanks chaps :)
I'm going to have to go to the bank and get a few pounds worth of pennies as I've run out lol

I wouldn't say authority, but I've got a good idea and hopefully the transition will work well. I'll send you a pm as well :)

The photos might be slightly over exposed but the sails are made form canvas and the sticking is draw on with a pencil so there is plenty of 'texture' there, just not showing here.

I know you have more piccies than this. Stop being stingy ;)

More penny based troops in the form of the Miyoshi and Murakami clans :)

The Miyoshi clan was pretty much wiped out in the latter half of the 16thcen and of course I only found this out after I started on them ::) lol
And below we have a picture of what I have to re-base...

Excellent, looking forward to a few games with that lot :D

Hell of a collection :o
That's a lot of unbasing!

Wow! What a brilliant collection and nice painting!
I always had a soft spot for this period as well, but I've only got it in 15 mm... that should keep me in the clear. lol

Need bank visit for lots of pennies ;D
Started work on a smaller bune that will eventually be another kit. Same principle as the other one, silly boxy thing on a rudimentary hull with a naff square sail lol

Out of curiosity... do you still do a 1:1 scale but with massive armies? Or is it a more "big battle" style ratio of models:troops?
Amazing collection, by the way!
-
I can see freshly based Martian Camel Corps in the background lol
Where's my balloon?
:D

It's more of a large skirmish but generally with a figure ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 or something like that. They were originally based for WAB and that could be any ratio you want, then I moved onto Hail Caeser but never played lol now it's for skirmish but with the option of ranking up using regular sabot trays (more on which later).
Where's my balloon?

Below are some small vignettes of some of the additions from my catalogue here (http://www.oshiromodelterrain.co.uk/catalogue28.html#additions) and will be used to demonstrate what they can be used for :)
First up is just a simple one with JA03 and JA09, cannon and barricades.

Finished the small seki-bune and painted it ready to go in a mould (painting helps define the details and seals the wood).

Nice stuff.
Been reading about the Japanese invasion of Korea this weekend to get a 15mm army sorted, there's plenty of nice scenarios for ship to ship action. Say a large 12' x 12' table at Salute nect year ;).
And just in case you haven't seen these yet to work out your repainting of banners problem:

Nicely does it, mate.

That dockside scene is gorgeous!

beautiful, your basing and woodwork painting is some of the best i have seen, would you consider makiing korean ships?

Gotta ask, mate: What colours did you use for that water?
It looks spot on!

Yes :)

Just a dark green with a bit of a light green towards the edge and then a generous coat of yacht varnish :)

Finished basing the Sanada force, took longer than I thought as a fair few needed patching up after several years of being used at Salute.

I'm having another look at the samurai mod I've got and will make a few changes as a few things have popped into my head that will hopefully capture the flavour of samurai warfare a bit more :)

Taisho is generally used as a catch all term for a commander, it can mean general or just group commander. I think it depends on the size of the force as well.

Seen a load of your buildings at the Falkirk show yesterday. A stunning table I'll post some photos later.

Great looking force, worth of wait to see them.
Will there be cavalry included with either of the forces?
Now, ganbare and show us more!

Yeah, the Old Contemptibles game, looking forward to seeing it 8)
Will there be cavalry included with either of the forces?
Cavalry never really had 'units' as we perceive them, it was more of a mixed unit of a few cavalry with their respective combat retainers mixed in, a bit of a bugger rules wise but not insurmountable :)
The Miyoshi force is on pennies now and just needs bases painted and a bit of tarting up :D

What a great collection!!! :o
Absolutely inspiring stuff. I really love the boats, too. Thanx for sharing!

Thanks again chaps :)
Thought I would post the Miyoshi Big Man level four base (four retainers). Future Big Man bases will be sabot trays with the appropriate amount of holes for the level status of the Big Man in question, thereof it can go up and down depending what happens in a campaign. It also gives more options if the figures are based singly.
Different types of retainers can be chosen and each type confers certain, small bonus' that might make a difference if played a the right time :)

What others have said, nice idea with command group and different bonuses and whatnots.
I guess that could be easily used in European setting as well, so it will be interesting to read your AAR then... soonish, right?
-
I guess that could be easily used in European setting as well, so it will be interesting to read your AAR then... soonish, right?
It could be used in a European setting but this was to help give some of the flavour of samurai warfare without tue necessity of major rules changes.
I think a game will ensue in a week or two (need to sort the cards out first) :)
cheers
James
-
Sounds great!
But aren't you an early bird... painting/basing more samurais currently I hope or finishing new terrain pieces? ;)
-
Started work again on a Sanada command base but using the 'new' system for Big Men they will be picked off and stuck on pennies and a sabot base made for them to go in :)

Naval battles. Very tempting
Got to sort out some rules first ;)
Finshed painting a couple of figures today as well, retainers for the Murakami Big Man (level two or three).
They are on a sabot base and I've made quite a few, with differing numbers of 'holes' for the differing number of retainers that might be needed, more on which later.

I also dug out my Ikko Ikki that will suit as Wako (without some of the more obvious monk type figures) and when they are based I can use them as allies for the Murakami to break up the colour monotony a bit :)
cheers
James

Very nice, mate.
That is a very effective and simple way of getting some 'movement' in that banner.
Clever!

Totesamazeballs!
They're Shamazing. :D
-
:-* :-* :-*
When i need inspiration to paint mine i know where to go. :D
Excelent painting James.
-
Mind if I ask what colours and method you used for the straw cape?
-
We shouldn't praise him this much, he works with architects. "I've seen better" will make him feel more comfortable :D
-
Many thanks gents :)
Mind if I ask what colours and method you used for the straw cape?
I think I started with Leather brown shade (these are all Foundry colours) and worked up from there. No particular triad was used, just lighter and lighter shades of suitable straw colours, it wasn't painted evenly either (although it doesen't look that way in the photos). Hope that helps :?
We shouldn't praise him this much, he works with architects. "I've seen better" will make him feel more comfortable :D
To be honest, most of them are very impressed with what we do ;D

Remember that we are talking about architects. It's not like they get much social interaction or outside stimulus...
-
Thanks mate. Sounds like I'm on the right track use need to built up to a lighter colour than I am currently doing.
-
Right then, finished rebasing a few civvies in preparation for Thursday's game.
That's right, game on Thursday! :D

All Perrys apart from three Old Glory which weren't too bad really apart from some dodgy casting :?
cheers
James
-
Can spot the old glorys from a mile off due to the faces. Did a good job of them though.
-
That is some fine work
-
They are stonking and the picture quality has leaped up in bounds ;D
-
Looking great! Your work is always motivational.
-
Cheers gents :)
cheers
James

Curious...might I ask about your camera set-up and details? Digital photography is an elusive and cruel mistress, and I am always looking to improve my meager skills at it. Your group shots are great, I need to try to emulate the results, so I get a focused shot on the whole group, instead of one or two of the minis.
-
The "trick" is not to be so close. Pull your camera back to get a better depth of field. Then use your photo editing software to crop the shot you want.
Yes, lighting and f-stop also contribute, but moving back really solved the problem for me.
-
Looking great this collection.
-
No game last night, but none of it was my fault ;D

Great job James.
Do you base tour ministro con coins? What size?
Emilio
Thanks :)
They are based on English pennies which are about 20-21mm in diameter.
We played the game and a report will be forthcoming this weekend :D

James

That is what I thought. At first they looked to me todo be bigger, buy they look great.
-
Looking forward to seeing the aar. oh, and great paint jobs on the civilians, but you knew that! :D
-
Aha! A game was played on Thursday and much fun was had :D
I had to put my feet up and let the bunny out after work but the scenery didn't take long to set up at all.
The small village of Kahano lays peacefully near the coast on the Kanto plain, unaware that a small raiding party of Wako and Ronin are on their way to steal and pillage.

But they are beaten and the victorious Murakami have the village... We felt the images from the destruction of the village were too distressing for the gentle folk here so we leave it to your imagination...
Actually, there weren't any photos from the end as I forgot to take any lol
Mo to follow in the coming weeks as the Murakami get braver and their attacks get larger. Can the local lord stop them before his daimyo has to intervene...
cheers
James
-
Shame you didn't get a photo of Marks Ashigaru hiding in the garden from the pirate archers ;) lol
A veritable feast for the eyes, wargames porn at its finest. :-*
And he wasn't kidding about letting the bunny out... :o
-
Inspirational. Think I may be purchasing a few more buildings from you over the next couple of months. I want my village looking like that! Not envious at all. Honest..
-
Absolutely gorgeous set-up.
Proper.
That is what that is.
Proper!
:-* :-* :-*
And he wasn't kidding about letting the bunny out... :o
Now I am scared!
:o :o
I must also note the use of a backdrop.
I do hope that you have the paperwork to prove that the services of a proper bona-fide, Union-affiliated Brother was used in the making of this production.
???
-
Sublime.
This is will double up as your terraformed Mars Victorian sci-fi board, right? :P
-
Great set of pictures Bibbles. The game was fun to play, even though my forces got trounced - I'm claiming it was the distraction front the bunny being out, that and the umpire not knowing the rules properly! lol lol
I will have my revenge.
-
Many thanks chaps :)
It was good to play as I might have mentioned, this was the first samurai game I've played for six years ::)
Shame you didn't get a photo of Marks Ashigaru hiding in the garden from the pirate archers ;) lol
You mean this one... ;)

Drop me a line Colon, got plenty of stock in ;)
No backdrop workers were harmed in the making of this report :D
Mars will definitely be staying red ;D
and the umpire not knowing the rules properly! lol lol
We had an umpire ???
cheers
James
-
I must also note the use of a backdrop.
I'm sure it's just Bibbly in a new t-shirt. He's putting on.
Oh yeah, and well, awesome! Well worth 10 years of work.
-
We had an umpire ???
cheers
James
He had to blame someone for losing and for his decision to hide his troops in a garden lol
-
Great report, what rules did you use?
-
About to ask the same question. Did you use the sharp practice mod?
-
Yeah, not very honourable really lol
In fact, I think a session of seppuku is in order >:D
cheers
James
lol
-
The rules were the Little Lead Adventures with a few alterations for the period.
We'll be using the SP rules and mods in the next game as this was only a tester to get the flavour :)
cheers
James
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Wow.
Just wow.
And you have a bunny in your games room? Me to! :D Actually I only have 2 now, used to have 5.
James
-
I'm hoping to adopt a few bunnies myself in the next month or two :) More on topic, lovely looking table and miniatures, looks like it was a fun game!
-
Great stuff, as always! Where did you source the backdrop? Also, is one of the bridges meant to be in disrepair?
-
The death poem of Sanada Akihito.
The clueless Gyōji
Steals my victory
While the Bunny taunts me
Empty-handed I entered
the world
Defeated I leave it
-
Awesome terrain! :o
Must have been a great game, with bunnies and all.
De'Ath, next time you must be more "shinimonorugui-desu" (I hope I got it right).
-
Thank you kindly gents :)
And you have a bunny in your games room? Me to!
It's unfortunately the lounge/dining room, no chance for a games room :(
Where did you source the backdrop? Also, is one of the bridges meant to be in disrepair?
Google images although I have some better ones that I've taken myself, jut need to print them out. The bridge was poked by a unmentionable at Salute a couple of years ago and I haven't bothered to repair it as it doesn't look too bad in disrepair :? :)
De'Ath, next time you must be more "shinimonorugui-desu" (I hope I got it right).
Jut about ;)
cheers
James
-
True inspirational work here!
Miniatures, terrain and photography are superb. You also made a good choice for those backdrop pictures
-
Jut about ;)
At some point I thought to get it inked (in Kanji of course) on my arm. Japanese friend was horrified at the thought lol
-
Great stuff and amazing pictures! :o
-
Stunning!! :-* :-*
-
This is the first time i have ever looked in "adventures in the far east" and i can see what i have been missing.
Jimbibbly, this is one of the best wargames tables/terrain/complete set ups i have seen.
Absolutely beautiful. :-*
I take my hat off to you!
-
Many thanks for that :)
You should come here more often, hopefully it would inspire you as your 15mm stuff is great (dark age village etc) and I think you could do wonders in this genre :)
cheers
James
-

Oh god no, don't start encouraging me to start off something new!!! I am trying really hard not to buy anything at all for a while and just finish off what i have.
Unfortunately i am at "Crisis" in Antwerp in a few weeks so i know i have not got a chance of keeping this vow.
-
These were the photos that made me order more buildings, one day I am determined to have a table 50% as good as Jims
-
It's not that bad to get a table like mine, the most important thing is to have an understanding wife lol
Seriously though, thanks chaps :) The praise certainly helps.
cheers
James
-
Understanding wife and a surplus of space I imagine.
-
Understanding wife and a surplus of space I imagine.
No surplus anymore ::) lol

Only spotted this Thread Jim - wonderful stuff. I ran a Bushido rpg campaign years ago and seeing those lovely sets and mini's brings back memories...
-
Right then, 15mm for a change :)
This is the start of a display base mainly for promo at shows but it'll get some use as well as I'm slowly basing all my 15s (a thankless task).

The oval in the back is a pond that will get landscape around it.
For shows I'll have little labels showing which product is which, I'll also be doing this with all the 15mm buildings and hopefully adding more to the range in the coming months :)
cheers
James
-
Beautiful display James, now ganbare and make some more nice things :)
-
Very cute and detailed. Dimensions? 20 x 15cm?
-
Brilliant James...just brilliant. Cracking looking compound.
-
Thanks chaps :)
It's about 230mm x 180mm. I put the garden fence in last night and will hopefully do the ground work this evening.
cheers
James
-
Nice work, mate.
:-*
AND a cracking idea to show exactly what is possible with those wonderful individual pieces.
8)
-
that is very nice sir, 15mm you say... hhmmmm ::)
-
Well, as some of you may know I've recently moved and tonight my new table gets its debut :)
Usual suspects +1 for a game tonight but here's a shot of the table waiting for the festivities to begin.

Report to follow tonight :)
cheers
James
-
Looks fab! :-*
-
Thats a very nice set up, one day I hope to get a board like that
-
Took ten years lol
The photo report will have to wait until tonight as I'm having a problem with photobucket on my pad (I'll have the laptop out tonight) ::)
cheers
James
-
Beautiful setup!!
And if it did take ten years it shows. :-*
-
The ten years was the time taken to persuade my wife I needed a room lol
Right then, technical difficulties are abated so on with the action...
The year is 1586 and things are starting to hot up on the south coast near Nagoya. The Murakami clan are getting more arrogant with their raids and more wako are teaming up with them to partake of the spoils...
The small village of Kaigawa just inland from the coast with Sanada forces moving through it to intercept the incoming Murakami

The Sanada moving through the village

The two forces get closer, who will spill the first blood!

The raiders enter the village and come under fire from some Sanada teppo on the periphery but with limited effect

The Sanada rush out from the village to try and catch the Murakami in the paddy fields (yes, I know there's only one lol )
But are taken out by the roaming wako
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/samurai/Battle%20reports/0610D450-4CEF-4B01-A0EF-02B017C0CDEB_zpsoi9bbjwb.jpg)
The Sanada samurai 'hide' behind some of the village buildings (a ritual disembowelling for Sanada Akihito if he survives...)
They finally come out from cover into a hail of arrows which they pass through relatively unscaved and see off the offending archers with aplomb
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/samurai/Battle%20reports/6CE2E172-C4F7-4B26-861A-84B3981289A1_zpspma8y9zf.jpg)

After seeing off the archers, the samurai turn on the remaining Murakami foot troops and a bitter struggle ensues...
But the Sanada samurai are victorious (just) and chase the last remnants from the field
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/samurai/Battle%20reports/58DACA45-C29C-4AA9-B08E-4B03C592A49E_zpst8xexgas.jpg)
But in their victory they forget the wako who are left to raid the village and kill the hapless locals (only two though so it wasn't too bad ;) )
All in all, quite a bloody game with no clear victor (although others will tell a different tale).
Will nothing stop the Murakami from plaguing the coasts...
cheers
James
-
Bloody hell!!!
:o :o :o
Some serious eye candy on display there, mate.
I have seen most of this at Salute and it never fails to impress again...and again.
:-* :-* :-*
The ten years was the time taken to persuade my wife I needed a room lol
I know that feeling.
The cupboard under the stairs can be quite claustrophobic at times.....
;)
The Sanada samurai 'hide' behind some of the village buildings (a ritual disembowelling for Sanada Akihito if he survives...)
De 'Ath with the Sanada, by any chance?
:D
-
Will nothing stop the Murakami from plaguing the coasts...
Nope :)
De 'Ath with the Sanada, by any chance?
:D
Not on this occasion, it was Malamute who was skulking in the cover this time - my archers were out in the open for all to see lol
-
The game, the table and the miniatures all look great mate. Look forward to seeing more.
-
Lovely stuff :-* :-* :-* :-*
Well worth the ten years
-
Those corner hills... :o :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* Splendid terrain James.
Congrats on the move, and celebratory game.
Cheers
Matt
-
Many thanks for the replies gents :)
It was good to play a largish game on a sturdy table... I foresee many more to follow :D
cheers
James
-
:o
Always a treat to see your gaming tables James, I hope that one day get to see at least one of them at Salute "live" :)
What rules were used with this, were there any Warlord special abilities in use (I faintly remember your previous post about such plans?)
-
Not on this occasion, it was Malamute who was skulking in the cover this time
I like to refer to it as making best use of the available cover. :D
A splendid game, most enjoyable except for my awful die rolls. lol
-
It was just a quick LLA punch up. Samurai were better than the normal troops, guns had a longer range, nothing special really.
I'll be giving the Sharp Practise mod an outing soon enough though :)
A splendid game, most enjoyable except for my awful die rolls. lol
Which were dire lol
cheers
James
-
:-* :-* looks great
-
That game looks so good James!
-
Looks spiffing James 8)
-
Oh so beautiful :-* :-* :-* :-*
BUT who was holding the back drop?
-
Thanks again chaps :)
BUT who was holding the back drop?
It's a secret ;)
cheers
James
-
BUT who was holding the back drop?
Exactly!
It had better have been a proper Brother (or Sister) of the Union.
>:D
-
Inspiring stuff :)
-
Excellent! Another Akira Bibbly epic 8)

Thanks again gents :)
I've been tarting up some older figures that need some desparate love, some of them didn't even have varnish on them lol
Mainly fixing weapons, touching up cuffs and adding patterns to the clothing when I can be bothered. They aren't as good as my more recent ones (they were done over seven years ago) but they'll pass muster on the table :)
Just a few at a time because I've got bloody hundreds of the buggers o_o
cheers
James

Looking good, mate.
Well worth doing, but it sounds like it will take a while.
No rush, though.
Good luck.
:D
-
Very impressive and inspirational stuff... Am also mightily jealous of the amount of space you have :-)
Best wishes,
Snake
-
Slowly, slowly catch'ee monkey :)
-
Looking good, if my painting was that good seven years ago I wouldnt be thinking of buying some more figures. This is inspiring me to sort out my stuff today and see what I have.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Got a few more done today so getting there, bit by bit lol
cheers
James
-
These are very nice Jim, I have just dug out my samurai project and having a bash at some part armoured ronin and peasants at the same time, great inspiration and great photos to steal ideas from 8)
-
Nice work mate. Should have my first small ground done soon myself. Been a damn long time coming.
-
Finally got round to doing some more OSHIRO items; a new town house and some new additions.
Won't be ready for Salute but not long after :)

I'm also greenstuffing some privacy screens to go over the doors but will probably get them metal cast. I've also made a start on a couple of cranes but my sculpting skills are a bit off :?

It is excellent work, well done.
-
Great new items to OSHIRO collection :-*
Besides the cranes, any other interesting stuff in the pipeline?

Lovely additions, mate.

And those boxes/barrels: No reason they could not work in plenty of settings.
I think that I shall be needing some of those when you have them ready.
-
Lovely stuff James 8)
(Though on my phone screen I had to look twice as for a moment I thought you'd sculpted a barrel of phallic totems! :o :D)
-
That looks awesome! I really love the details like the shingles and the wooden parts :)

You should be an estate agent, they always make every property seem lovely.
The difference is: Yours are.
Unlike those bloody lying estate agents.

Man thanks gents :)

As a side question, are the big drum and bell tower going to be back in stock soon?
-
Thanks again gents :)
Well, that's Salute over for another day, got in at about 7:30, went to bed at 7:45 and got up about half an hour ago lol
Here are some brief shots I managed to take on the day. Some of you my notice the samurai house, I'll take some decent pictures of that in the next day or so and post them up (I finished it about 3:30 Saturday morning ::) ).
It's a fairly similar set up to last year but with our house move and being fairly ill fairly often this year I didn't get a chance to do what I wanted :(

Many thanks to my helpers for helping run the game and chat to people 8)
As a side question, are the big drum and bell tower going to be back in stock soon?
Yes, originally both had scratch built parts but I'll be getting most part metal cast and the masters are nearly done.
cheers
James

James

Jaw dropingly stunning as always :-*
Looking forward to getting my hands on a small part of it soon i hope ? :P
-
Damn!!
I´m envy of you guys to have shows like these in UK. Nothing of that in Portugal :'(
Lovelly table James. :-* :-*
Your work is an inspiration.
-
That's just brilliant looking terrain, as always :-*
-
Table was beautiful, as was much of what Oshiro had on sale.
-
Lovely table.
Hard to top the other comments written before mine.
So a big thank you for letting us share your figures and terrain.
-
I had the opportunity to see it in person, and only can say amazing! :o
-
Thanks again gents :)
Finally took some photos of the almost complete samurai house. The build for this is linked below but the roof was done in a rush for Salute so I didn't take any photos of the build for that unfortunately. The good thing is I'm happy with the roof (although it's a tad small) and will do a proper build progress on the next one.

Still got the interior and a few other small things for the exterior to do but it's suitable for the table as it is now :)
cheers
James

Wonderful! :-*
Going to do interior as well? Is this a new thing for your builds?
-
As I said on the build thread ....
Splendid indeed! :-*
It was well worth the wait: a beauty :-* :-* :-*
-
Blossom! :-*
The house is a beauty too. One of your best I think James. Well done indeed :)
-
Very nice! :-*
-
What a beautiful house James, :-* The timber work is exceptional, as is the scatter! 8)
Cheers
Matt

Top notch! As always.

Now that is a place I would like to live in :-* :-*

Very pretty indeed.

Many thanks for the positive comments gents :)
Going to do interior as well? Is this a new thing for your builds?
I think so for the larger buildings that I'll do as it'll add more to the games.
cheers
James

I feel mentally and spiritually at peace. Pure Zen!
-
splendid build, so colourful, i like the contrasting colours on the shoji screens also :)
-
Yeah, I'm echoing everyone else's comments. Lovely.
-
That is a truly beautiful looking scene there, mate.
Very peaceful.
:-* :-*
You should be well proud of it.
As the Captain said, one of your best.
:D
-
Perfect.
-
Thanks again gents :)
Took a couple of 'mood' shots with the internal lights in. Looks better in real life of course but you get the idea.

It's warmer in reality and the shoji door isn't stuck in yet :)
cheers
James
-
Pink lights? It's a samurai disco? Or on the edge of the red light district?
-
Lovely :-* :-* :-*
Don't let my brother see this he has a thing about lights
-
Judging by recent posts, I think Mr Bibbly's favourite colours are tending towards cheery blossom pink and shades of lavender.
I'm beginning to suspect he has branched out of his day job into interior design. Either that or he's doing a DIY restoration project for an 1980s era bordello. :D
-
On a more serious note - does that roof meet code? Runoff will pool against the gable we can't see from this angle.
-
Jim that looks fantastic.
-
For the "after dark" points, you might want to dim the light a bit, otherwise it's great
-
Lovely :-* :-* :-*
Don't let my brother see this he has a thing about lights
Ohhhhh! Lights!!
You could add to it. A couple of spotlights inside, some downlighters in the sawfit outside and maybe a few solar powered lights along the driveway! Oh lights! Lights! Lights!
How are you powering your lights? Batteries?
-
Thanks chaps :)
Nothing wrong with interior design (as long as you get the colour balance right ;) )
On a more serious note - does that roof meet code? Runoff will pool against the gable we can't see from this angle.
Which bit? And the lights are a lot warmer in reality ;D
How are you powering your lights? Batteries?
It's a tiny little battery tea light (waterproof as well). I inked it with a few coats of some orange ink to get rid of the whiteness (it' not pink in reality ;D )

Very atmospheric
-
Now that is nice
-
Very well done. :-* :-*
-
Waterproof lights :o :o :o
That's an important thing to have on a wargames table, Especially if it has a doggy roof according to some ;D ;D ;D
-
Very nice :-*
Next a water feature with real water flowing? :)
-
Very nice!
-
Serious question. How do you change the batteries? Does the roof come off or are the doors sufficiently wide to allow the whole thing to come out that way?
It's bloody clever anyway.
-
The roof comes off and for the moment it's taped inside the roof space with masking tape :D
cheers
James
-
Once again, you've done a wonderful job on this house !
-
Very cool, it'd be cool to play on a table with a dimmer switch --- turn down the lights just enough to really get the on-table effect from a set-up like this. Very slick.
-
Absolutely beautiful work... never disappoint! Richard
-
Just like the real ones!! :-* :-*
You have me tempted on the terrain front James, a little japanese house would be a great little build...
Have you seen the 1/50 Nara temple model? It's flaming huge! o_o
Cheers
Matt
-
awesome! That is a hell of a brilliant display of things. Very inspiring. Will steal here too - inspirationally, I mean.
I intent to go for a table as well, to give my Ronin buntai a home (to fight for), too. Planning for some modular thing, all in all about 1squaremeter, divided in 4 (Samurai, Ikko-Ikki, Sohei, and Bandits) quadrants. Should be enough for my little brawls.
And here are lots of good examples.
thanks for showing!

A bit of commission work this time but I thought I'd stick it here and not start another thread.
Our very own olyreed has asked me to make him some Boshin era buildings for the demo games he's going to be putting on next year.
For now it's two kura and a shop (unless I can persuade him to get some more >:D )

The signage on the left hand kura is for the Mori clan. Really quite pleased with the brick work on these but it's not as good in the photos typically ::)
Still the doors on the kura and the roof on the shop plus scenic bases for both and they'll be done. Work got in the way of me finishing them earlier :(
-
Wow, amazing work James! :o
-
:o Great constructions....I love the samurai house :-* but this buldings are nice too!
-
WOW :-* :-* They look amazing, I might just have to get some more ordered now I have seen these, Thanks James
-
Thanks chaps :)
I'll post a wip Colin when I've cut some bits out.
cheers
James

Superb Stuff Jim
-
Wow i've been through all pages of this! Inspirational work. Looks like most of your figures are Perry? I am doing a Kings of war Fantasy Samurai army using war games factory (not the best I know) but a good price. I hope that terrain website you get your stuff from ships to the USA? Quick question do you make all of your own trees? Care do do a tutorial? Again great stuff.
-
Top class builds 8) 8) 8)
Will they be for sale............ :)
-
Took a while but the Boshin building commissions are pretty much complete. Just the doors in the storehouses to do (they are being cast) and simple internals, more of which later.
The roofs are removable and I'll take some internal shots later this week.

Wood clad iron I believe although my wife wasn't 100% sure of the translation as part of the I for board next to the original building had worn away.

Just a question. Many, if not most pictures of Asian pan tiled roofs, I've seen are, like these, in a grey or greyish green colour. Pan tiling in the Med and in South America usually ranges between, biscuit, ochre and terracotta. You only see greys where mildew has accreted (quite common in tropical parts). I presume that Chinese and Japanese pan tiles are just fired clay, like their European counterparts. That being so what gives them their distinctive hue? Surely it's not just the clay used as it must vary a fair bit from place to place.
Inquiring minds must know and this place is as good as any to ask.
-
Good question :)
The tiles are fired but then they are glazed as well, especially for better class buildings but the clay when fired is grey in nature as oppose to the terracotta colour in the west.
The colours do vary around the country as they do in Europe and I try to changes the shades on the buildings that I do.
cheers
James
-
Cant stop coming back to this page and looking at them and i should be working :D

OK, so it is just the clay type. I suppose that makes sense. Bone china and porcelain having their provenance out east. Thinking about it the roofs of the Forbidden city are all the more familiar terracotta colour and photos I've seen of temples and houses in Vietnam show quite a bit of variation.
Cheers.

More Bibbly brilliance!

More Bibbly brilliance!
Indeed!
Love the frontage on the grey building, those 'doors'(?) are great.
:-* :-*

They are sublime! :-*

Thanks chaps :)
@Carlos - Interestingly, red and yellow were the imperial colours in ancient China, wit yellow having more importance than the red.

Only for some ;)

Bit of a commercial post this one as I've finished a new master for the Post Town range.
It could also be used for later periods and the lower front window is a separate item that will also be available separately.

This is being moulded now and I'll have a few casts ready for Salute.
I've also got this one that I've had for a while now, also suitable for later Sengoku and Edo/Meiji periods. Still painting up a display version for the show but I'll show it here when it's ready.

We all know it's inevitable so you might as well get cracking on it......
Your appreciative audience expects a pond/pool full of goldfish and carp, with a little oriental bridge and one of those raked pebble gardens. Authentic Ye Olde Japan, via a garden centre. Oh and little terracotta pots filled with bonzai trees and bamboo.

Eventually ;)
Well, made some more terrain for my ever continuing Japanese project. This time a yamashiro watchtower.
The main uprights were lasered and then 'joined' together with the horizontals, decking was added and the roof was made. The roof is separate to allow figures to be placed on top. Still got a ladder to do and it'll be on the outside (there are several different types including ones that have ladders and platforms on the inside but this was the easiest option).
It stands 250mm tall ad I've got the parts for another so I might do a bit more of a wip post next.

Oddly enough I did a "watchtower" search on LAF earlier today, and now this shows up in my replies. lol Lovely work! :)

The flags are interchangeable so I can have some small games soon without painting a load more lol
cheers
James

There have been "grand" naval encounters with fewer ships, just get more each time people talk about it. :D
-
They look superb, Mr Bibbly.
Good idea with the interchangeable flags too.
:-* :-*
(Although it does seem a little disturbing to me, setting off to war in a giant coffin. ;)).

Thanks chaps :)

They were basically fighting platforms so you're not that wrong lol

James

Jolly Nice, how about a picture 'under sail'?
-
No, because I've only got one sail lol
cheers
James
-
They look great, very impressive. looking forward to seeing them in action
-
Very nice!
I am beginning to understand how it was that an island nation didn't become a maritime power until the 20th C. I wouldn't want to sail in one of those in a mild breeze on the Serpentine.
-
The Japanese pretty much limited themselves to coastal sailing and so didn't fully explore the necessity for true ocean going vessels until the end of the long peace.
Obviously there were ocean vessels (trade ships and the like) but from what I can gather, losses in storms etc were quite high.
cheers
James

Great stuff! 8) What's the hinged masts all about?
-
Now you need to make a Portuguese black ship. lol
-
Great stuff! 8) What's the hinged masts all about?
That's how they were stored during battle.
Now you need to make a Portuguese black ship. lol
Don't tempt me lol
Got the Koreans to do first though ;)

(Although it does seem a little disturbing to me, setting off to war in a giant coffin. ;)).
Convenient for when they are all sunk on their maiden voyage. ;) :D
Splendid work, an impressive fleet indeed. Now you need to do some opposition for them ;D
-
OK the Korean imjin war ships do take priority
. Need to cast some molds of those boats though. Make it easier for lazy guys like me some lol
-
Has any one here watched the tv Drama "The Immortal Yi Soon Shin"?
-
Not yet but I did watch 'Roaring Currents' on dvd the other week and thought it was rather inspirational (same tale but in film form).
There's some good screen shots to grab from it :)
cheers
James

I enjoyed that movie, watched it a few months ago, and am Now reading "The imjin war" by Samuel Hawley

Got a few photos for the BLAM weekend (weekend just gone) to show. Some really quick homebrew rules and each game lasted about an hour and a half.
The basic scenario was two boats of pirates had sailed up the river and were looking to 'apprehend' some peasants and spirit them away and the local daimyo had sent a small force to stop them. Peasants were worth five points for each one captured and pirate deaths were worth one point each. Each game was close and went down almost to the last.
Some of you might have seen them on Twitter or Intsagram but here they re for completeness.

I was lucky enough to game on this and I was terrified of touching it! It really is utterly stunning. It's making me want to start some Samurai gaming. I kept on noticing new bits of detail everytime I looked at it. Thanks for the game James.

A pleasure chaps :)
