Title: The Northern California Wasteland
Post by: rollawaythestone on 20 November 2015, 06:56:18 PM
Hi Everyone,

Long time post-apoc and Fallout fan. Stumbling across the This Is Not A Test Ruleset through Guerrilla Miniature Games  (https://guerrillaminiaturegames.wordpress.com/) inspired me to get started on building a few post-apocalyptic warbands and terrain. My brother and I are starting Fallout inspired warbands for a narrative campaign that I hope to document and share once we get all our terrain and miniatures painted. I wanted to share the beginnings of my collection.

Here are some teasers of my Hubologist warband; the post-apocalyptic remnants of the Church of Scientology in San Francisco. I am using the Preserver warband rules for them. This is my Savant and three Seekers. I will be painting up a Lorekeeper, a wreck-it-bot, and a med-bot to join them for the beginning warband. A prophecy draws them to the Sac-Town wasteland...

Love the take of your world.
Excellent terrain.
California, you say.
Your figures look a lot like some of
my relatives still living down there. ;)

This is a shot of my full WIP Hubologist warband. The theme I wanted was going for the hooded religious zealots that you see in Fallout 2, but also I wanted them to have a strange, exotic, and perhaps alien, technological bent. I am really happy with how these guys are turning out. Out of the gate, I am going to prioritize painting my 400pt warband first before finishing up the extraneous guys.

I also have been pulling in a haul of Plasticville buildings. Here is the first all apocalypsed-up. I'm going to spackle and spray it tomorrow probably.

Good start sir!  Where the hooded zealots from - I don't recognize them?

And how are you doing the road - I kinda like that look, and it may be easier than the way I was doing them.

Title: Re: Beginning of my California wasteland...
Post by: Predatorpt on 21 November 2015, 05:24:14 PM
@Sinewgrab - I think the zealots are from Anvil Industries. Made by Miniatures of the North but sold by Anvil.

Post by: rollawaythestone on 21 November 2015, 05:57:53 PM
Yup! They are from Anvil Industry. The road is done by mounting rubble shaped pieces of foam board to mdf or other hard basing and sparkling the gaps between rubble pieces.

All my plasticville terrain arrived in the mail today so i've been prepping some of them. I will post pictures as more get built and primed. I really really am loving the highway overpass sign. It's a perfect sniper nest and looks excellent IMO.

I finished my 400pt starting warband for my Hubologists. I don't normally finish projects so quickly, nor am I normally happy to get my minis to tabletop quality and then be content, but with this project I am happy where they are. I'll probably go back and work on some details and such - possibly highlight the grey up another level - but I am happy to have my warband done. I still gotta finish their bases.

The starting warband contains a Lorekeeper, Savant, Wreck-it-bot, Heal-o-matic, and three Seekers. I still gotta come up with some names, but I think the Seekers (the robed cultists with SMG's) will be Brother Cruise, Brother Travolta, and Brother Beck (?). The Heal-o-matic will be the Auditor 9000, or something similar.

Yeah I might have to do that. I'll have to scrounge up a straight line stencil of some sort.

So what's the praying guy armed with?

I wanted to kitbash the model a particularly strange contraption to carry around into battle. Right now, he is armed with a Zinger - basically a energy or nanotech weapon that causes Relics (including power armor and robots) to Malfunction. It's not the strongest option, but I wanted to kit my guys out with the stranger more advanced weaponry. It could easily pass as a plasma rifle down the road as well.

This is the state of my terrain so far. Several pieces have yet to be painted, and several pieces need to be repainted. I also want to touch up my board and perhaps lighten it up. It at a minimum still needs a drybrush of a lighter color. I built it last year to play 40k on and it's going to become the new Sacramento wasteland. This is about what I want to get done before my first campaign games. I think one of the main things my collection is lacking is scatter terrain, so I gotta think about that...

Title: Re: Beginning of my California wasteland...
Post by: DELTADOG on 26 November 2015, 07:42:09 AM
Very good start. The oveall Colorsheme is well choosen. I would be very gentle in lighten this up, its easy to destroy this dark atmosphere. To enrich the board I would suggest some of this funny Glowing mushrooms with this greenish glow. That would add some lighter areas and would bring some color to the board!
The large lake looks a bit emty as well atm. Maybe a little diorama like half sunk Barrels with this Fallout typical Radiation paintjob on it would make a next cracking spot on. Adds additional color and brings a lighter area to the board.

Hilarious army choice- absolutely love it! Having grown up outside of Sacramento, I'm really looking forward to seeing how this develops. You should think about getting some old west buildings to represent old town. Or a community at the remains of Sutter's fort.

I like your table.
I agree with the others, add scatter terrain painted in lighter colors.
An example, things you could set on top of the water.
Like dead bodies.
You could then change them out.
It looks like" California Dreaming"  on a winter's day. :D

Thanks all! These are some great ideas. I'll probably work on getting some scatter terrain to put around the board and lighten it up like you all have suggested. I want to make bunches of radioactive waste to place around - i've been thinking about picking up glow-in-the-dark spray paint to finish off such a piece.

Great piece,  that billboard is excellent!

Just an observation in an attempt to be helpful,  but perhaps the up and over doors would benefit from a splash of colour (probably the same red of the trim) to visually break up the self coloured frontage? You could paint the whole door, just the framework,  or just the rectangular pieces.

I've just restarted Fallout 3 having got nowhere with it years ago so I'm now enjoying your thread.

Edit: changed 'not' to 'now' so that bottom sentence makes sense! Sorry

Post by: horridperson on 03 December 2015, 02:23:01 PM
Maybe some red on those doors and the lettering above them.  A little white between the raised red lines (your gas-oil line) would really bring your station in line with your bill board.  It looks awesome as is but some branding would kick it up another notch.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone! I'm liking the idea of adding some more red details and making the doors red. I had a similar thought about changing the door but held off because I didn't want to add yet another coat of paint on top... Hopefully a repaint doesn't gunk it up too much.

I wanted to share the current state of my terrain. It's gettin' there. Most of the big pieces are done. Now I just need to work on that scatter terrain. I took all your advice and repainted the gas station doors red. I think they look quite nice. Many of the pieces here are refurbished bits of terrain from my 40k collection with a fresh coat of paint to match my new board. I want to get a hold of a few 0-scale cars to use as scatter - they are just so expensive... I keep fishing for ebay auctions and haven't found anything quite yet that seems like a deal.

Looking good!  The gas station pops nicely now and the statue rocks.  I still think the highway and signage look great and hope to tackle something similar in the near future (all I got done this week were some lousy cacti :( ).

Never go looking looking for O scale unless you want to pay a lot.  Have a look for 1/43 diecast toys.  The scale is just about right and the cost doesn't suffer from, "Model Railroad Inflation".

Thanks for the compliments! I'm liking how the statue is turning out. I agree that the smaller pieces really bring a board to life - its just that they tend to not be the priority. I'll check out some of the diecast cars instead or some of those Disney Cars. Gunbirds thread convinced me that maybe I should pick up some of those.

Have a look at KiNSMART diecasts, look in my Fallout thread for examples of them (quite liberally) covered in rust. I used them from all over the scale map (1/55-1/32 even).  Also I grabbed a few O scale trucks on ebay that have this cab: (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NDgwWDY0MA==/z/Mf8AAOSwMmBVo-qt/$_1.JPG?set_id=880000500F)
that it looks like the F3/NV trucks were somewhat patterned after.  They're not the cheapest, but I figured for only getting 1 or 2 of them it was worth it for the look. Just search 'ERTL 1950 o scale truck'.

Here are also a few more of my Red Rocket gas station as foreground for a bunch of the small terrain pieces I've been working on. I went and bought a huge lot of Disney Cars for super cheap. They turned out okay. I'm not 100% happy with the scale, but they are adequate for now - and for the price I got them at, I can't really complain.

That is a fine looking table, there.  Kudos to you!  As an aesthetic question, is there a reason you went so dark for the ground colors?
Title: Re: Beginning of my California wasteland...
Post by: rollawaythestone on 05 January 2016, 05:56:19 AM
I originally built the board for 40k - I was going for a muddy desolate death-world. My 40k armies are painted in light colors, so they pop nicely on the board with the contrast. it is quite dark, and since I've started this post-apoc project, i've questioned my choice with the darker color scheme. I've been considering adding some yellow dried grass flock to the board and the individual terrain pieces to lighten the overall presence a bit. I think the colors do fit a bit, though, as the Sacramento area is a big wetland and so I imagine the place as one big muddy bog of a place as sea levels rise due to global warming.

Post by: Hupp n at em on 05 January 2016, 06:40:28 AM
I think the color works pretty well. I was trying to match the ground color of Fallout 3 with my bases, but I think I've given up and will just go with whatever medium brown is readily available at Michael's.  ::)
Title: Re: Beginning of my California wasteland...
Post by: Sinewgrab on 05 January 2016, 07:07:05 AM
Reasonable reasoning.  I finally ended up on a raw sienna highlighted with a desert sand color for all of my terrain - I figured out later that the amount of orange I was seeing in the visuals was actually an error on the TV's part, but I really liked it, so left it.  It works well, and I can gray it out without it seeming dulled, which is a real trick sometimes.

If you decide to move away from it, I would highly suggest just using the dark as a base, and using gray and light brown mixed with it to highlight up.  It ties the old terrain in without making it seem out of place.  I am doing that with my VSF and Fallout stuff, so that I can use both on the terrain boards I have made.

All in all, great stuff!

A couple more pieces of terrain i've been working on. I've gone through and added dried grass to my pieces - i'm liking the effect. The glue is still setting on these.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone. I am blown away with how much i've worked on these last few months. As far as hobby projects go, I am notoriously slow-going. I have a few other buildings waiting in the queue. I am hoping to have enough to play through the city streets. I want to get a few bits of scenery for the inside of some of the buildings - things like office supplies and computers, but have been having trouble finding good pieces that fit.

I also just ordered The Banker from Spectre Miniature (http://www.spectreminiatures.com/collections/objectives/products/pre-order-discount-the-banker) for my Hubologists. When the Hubologists declare the start of a formal conflict between parties, they send out The Lawyer to declare war and "sue" their adversaries as was the ancient custom of the Church of Elron in the times before the Great Deluge.

Working on some K-9's for the NCR Rangers. I wanted to go with German Shepherd markings, but then I have to decide on a color for the body-armor that contrasts enough with the colors. What do you think I should do?

This looks really atmospheric, I have no idea of what fallout is but you can see from your work that it is some dark and forbidding place in the future.

I personally prefered the ground before the drybrush because it was so uncompromisingly dour which reflects the sort of world I think you are trying to portray. Although I would agree from an artistic point of view the dry brush works well.

Apart from the fact that I think your work is ace I like the feed back you are getting and using.

Very inspirational in a dark way

Keep it up

So jealous of that board, what is the highway made of?

The dogs ended up nice with the tan body armor, thanks for letting me know where to get them  :)

Did guns dominate the fairly open board? I´ve played a few games of TNT, and it seems to demand almost infinity-level of terrain density for a good balance between melee and guns.

Yes, because no one had any CC. My personal opinion is that CC is really effective in TNT. It's so easy to get cover (with all the terrain everywhere) and manipulate Ranged values favorably. Double moving into Heavy Cover gives your opponent a -3 to shoot you, a 30% reduction in the chance to hit for a single shot. A rank and file guy would have to hit on 9's and 10's. A bunch of CC guys running at you are generally going to survive to make it into combat, in my experience. Also it's generally easy to hide behind line of sight blocking terrain. In our last game, everyone was focusing on Ranged combat, but it was all really ineffective because of all the cover everywhere (which is awesome!). The Ranged combat that tends to dominate are Support Weapons (but they are still on guys that typically have Ranged 4, which will hit on 9's against someone who double-moved and is in cover) and guys who are really elite ranged combatants with Marksman and Pre-fall ammo, for instance.

Post by: Mr. Peabody on 13 February 2016, 08:42:27 PM
We have only played a couple of games so far, but our impressions jive with what Rollawaythestone reports. We will be increasing the amount of suitable scatter terrain & cover to help make the table a bit more interesting.

Our first game was a three-player run at 'Pest Control'. We ended up with many models in close combat very quickly, despite superior movement and very shooty lists. In fact this was one of the better zombie scenarios I can remember playing!

Our second game, a one-on-one, saw a lot more movement. The need to double move, go prone and use cover when advancing into range and LOS of an enemy put a hit on the amount of shooting that was going on.

I imagine that as a campaign progresses and models gain wounds and defence, the 'grazing' rule will come into play more often.

Title: Re: Beginning of my California wasteland...
Post by: rollawaythestone on 13 February 2016, 09:04:06 PM
Yeah, grazed can also be pretty beneficial honestly. If you survive your shooting and fail your grazed test, you drop prone - making you even harder to hit (as being prone gives your opponents -1 Ranged to shoot you). Also, any person who moves before or after shooting, suffers a -1 to their Ranged. In short, there are tons and tons of negative modifiers that are really easy to stack when you have to rely on shooting. Whereas, CC has few of these negatives, and in trying to get into CC with a Ranged combatant, it will typically be hard for them to hit you cause you will double move and attempt to utilize cover on the way in.

Although we found the wording a bit vague, we quite like how TNT handles cover from intervening terrain.

*Edit* This post was full of errors about TNT the first time around. Fixed now. - Was a bit absent minded due to multi-tasking.  :?

Title: Re: Beginning of my California wasteland...
Post by: Illumini on 13 February 2016, 09:50:17 PM
I agree that close combat is good in TNT. I think TNT has done very well to balance shooting and close combat to make both interesting. It really feels like you need both to have a good gang. The prone and jamming effects really help to not make shooting overpowered.

I still think you need a lot of cover and LOS blocking for shooting not to dominate. You don`t get the -1 to hit if your opponent moves before you this turn   ;)

Pest control is fun, the zombies are worse than they look on paper  :o Snipe hunt is the best TNT mission I`ve played yet.

Interest has exploded over TNT in my local club. My brother and I decided to re-start our campaign (we only finished one-game and I didn't even finish the battlereport) to include a few others who are almost done and painted and ready to go.

Chapter 1 of the TNT campaign will involve a search for an undamaged nuclear weapon lost in the ruins of Sacramento. Each war band's motivations might involve capturing and selling it, detonating or launching it to destroy your enemies, some sort of scientific experiment requiring nuclear fuel, or whatever those deranged wastelanders might dream up. Regardless, whoever controls this great weapon will shape the future of the Sacramento Wasteland.

I do not consider myself a speedy hobbyist. I've been working on my 40k Tyranids for a couple years and have barely painted up 2000pts. I am amazed that i've gotten so much done lately. Particularly all these terrain pieces. This genre really invokes my imagination and gets me pumped to build and paint. All my efforts have really energized my local group around playing This Is Not A Test. I'll try and write up a painting summary later.

Thanks everyone for the cool ideas. Red Racer factory, huh? I should have gone with a red paint scheme then... Hmm...

Been super busy lately starting up our TNT campaign.  (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=88246.0)

Some of you wanted me to do a bit of tutorial for how I've painted some of my buildings. I finally snapped some pictures to share.

Painting the Apocalypse: Quick and Dirty

Prime black or whatever you like.

I then basecoat a raw umber.

Using a sponge, I start adding color to the building by dabbing.

I will then add a wash at some point.

Then a lighter color tone added with a sponge and dabbing.

For the roof I am using a burnt umber.

Then a highlight (again with a sponge).

.. and a wash.

The rubble (which I want to have that same burnt rust color, will go through the same process as the roof).

Then I add a orange to the roof again with a sponge to add that rust look. I am using Games Workshop's Ryza Rust for this.

This is all i've done so far on this guy. I will post more as I work on it.

Lookin' good so far, is that a Plasticville Firehouse? I own a number of yet uncompleted Plasticville kits, but have held of the firehouse due to acale concerns, but it looks big enough to act as a small auto shop perhaps.

Also a question, is the sponging method all to disimilar from drybrushing, or is it simply a matter of speed?
Title: Re: Beginning of my California wasteland...
Post by: rollawaythestone on 13 March 2016, 03:58:51 AM
Sponging and drybrushing share the same principle, in my opinion. They will both add paint to the raised surfaces. I think sponging has the advantage for this style of painting in that you can add paint quicker to a surface, and it naturally makes the paint look weathered wherever it is sponged on. Whereas drybrushing just hits that raised surface with color.

Also instead of dabbing, you can also rub paint into a surface really easily for a smoother finish. I think the sponge is really nice for big terrain pieces. That said, I touch things up with a brush afterwards - to get those spots that the sponge misses.

You can see how it just looks weathered and chipped already from where it was added with the sponge. If you add your layers cleverly, you can get all sorts of cool weathered effects really easily.

Also, there are many textures and qualities of sponge to choose from...

I've seen vehicles painted this way that look like they were airbrushed. The guy who painted them used those triangular, super smooth make-up sponges.

I did my rusted out Fallout cars like this. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=78764.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=78764.0)  I should clarify that I don't think mine look like they were airbrushed.  lol

I like the effect a lot! I'll have to try this out when I get around to my Plasticville stuff.  I really like your buildings, I can tell from looking at them that the process is fairly simple but it still gives a more-than-simple result and it seems like you can really crank them out this way.

Wanted to update with what i've been working on lately.

Some shots from my expanded Hubologists (469BS strong!). Picked this book up for a few dollars because I thought it would be hilarious - and it is!. Never imagined the extent to which scientology content actually overlaps with the post-apocalypse. Some gems: "... in the Purification program when properly and fully done, there is this side benefit of lessening the consequences of radiation exposure... and that poses the interesting possibility that only [Hubologists] will be functioning in areas experiencing heavy atomic fallout in an atomic war."

Also painted up a giant tick.

Some zombie nests / animal nests for the TNT mission Pest Control.

Based my sewer dwelling Feral Ghoul warband.

Put together a few Tribals from the Warlord games Woodland Indians box.

and finally got a basecoat and wash, and started on the layers on my super mutant. Gotta find some additional models that fit the scale and aesthetic of this guy.

Yeah thats the Reaper "Mega-mutant" (I added the manhole cover shield). I like the mini - and I grabbed it for really cheap on Miniature Market when it was on clearance. But it's hard to find other models that are in the same scale and aesthetic to use as other super mutants. I like the brother vinni model - it's just a little static, and I'm unsure whether it will be in scale with this reaper mini.

I dunno how exact a match they are, but I did a quick lineup shot of some of the models I've been gathering for Super Mutants.

Basically the same Mega-Mutant from Reaper along with more Reaper (Bones orc, some Dark Barbarian guy who will be getting a headswap), and then Hasslefree and Heresy Barbarians.  Some height variation, but all the right beefcake musculature, and even the shortest looks imposing next to a human figure.  The shorter ones I plan to mount up a bit on their bases to add to the height as well.

Lousy pic, but it should give you an idea about the size.
from left to right :
supermutants : CMON ogre with chain gun ; HF Druuschan Jothun #2 ; Brother Vinni Postapoc Ogre ; Dreamblade Butcher
humans : em4miniatures (grenadier) scavenger; GW cultist ; Reaper Bones' The Black Mist ; GW terminator from way back.

CMON mini comes with the rocky outcrops as base hence why he's so tall. Dreamblade figs are 40mm so that one's more of a supermutant overlord.

No problem, yeah they are a bit pot-bellied but it's covered by the armor enough to look convincing IMO.  Some of the poses are better than others, though I'm considering headswaps on just about all of them, and possibly on some of the metal barbarians. While we're discussing suitable Super Mutant figure options, anybody know of separate heads that would work with, for example, the Reaper Bones orcs?

Wow, I just read this thread from start to finish and it's amazing!  Really impressive stuff.

Two suggestions.

1- If you're still looking for cheap o-scale cars, check Menards, they have a line of pre-weathered boxcars for $20 each and they can be ordered online.  Their basic flatcars are only $8 each, but I think you might have to go in-store for them. http://www.menards.com/main/c-14331.htm
Menards actually has a pretty wide range of o-scale stuff, much of it at bargain prices compared to what O stuff usually goes for.

2- Switching from GW to craft paint (avaialble at michaels/JoAnn/HobbyLobby/etc) will save you a bundle when it comes to terrain painting.

Keep up the good work!

I'm glad you enjoyed my thread! I have had an immense amount of fun building and painting all this stuff - with more to come! Thanks for the suggestions. I will check out the cars. I use hobby paint to do my mai nbasecoats for all my terrain - but use the GW, mainly because I already own the colors and don't have to go out and buy some new craft paint. Im sure my craft paint collection will slowly grow, though.

Also, I'd point out that the Heresy Barbarians are generally a bit taller than those from Hasslefree, as Super muties should be nice and big.  Both awesome companies to order from though, (I'm in the US as well and have never bothered with distributors for their lines) and great sculpts.  :)  I just realize some people actually stick to a budget or draft their warband list before buying shiny toys, so may not need that many...  ::)

Lawyers and roaches – even the end of the world could not stop them. When the Hubologists march to battle, they send out The Lawyer to declare war and "sue" their adversaries as was the ancient custom of the Church of Elron in the times before the Great Deluge. Each lawyer is a champion of combat who obtained a sacred law degree from the ruined depths of one of the law schools of San Francisco in order to cast off their old identity and be anointed by the Hubologists for war.

Hey all!

The water bottles are from Meng Miniatures. You can find them on Amazon for like 8$.

The Lawyer is from Spectre miniatures. They make some really awesome modern minis and cool scenario minis like the one I used for the Lawyer.

The buildings are from Gamecraft Miniatures. They make some really awesome stuff. I am painting up a set of those brownstone buildings and will post them when they are done. I'm very close to finishing them.

Babywipes (without a pattern, lest u get little unicorns everywhere) when dried completely, cut to size and folded over a few times, then soaked in a non water soluable PVA glue make for excellent curtains and drapes.

Thanks guys! It was a fun project. Was a bit draining to paint so many of the same type of buildings - I have a bit too much hobby ADHD for that. :P They do look great all together though. I've never had such a consistent and thematic set of terrain before. Loving it.

Down the road I want to consider adding some bits to the outside of these to spruce them up some more. I'm thinking broken air conditioning units, busted sattelite dishes, power lines, etc. I also want to get some dumpsters or trash cans to decorate the outside of the buildings.

A small update. Finished a Sawbones doctor for the NCR Rangers. He'll be on tour with Sierra Company in Northern California for the indefinite future.

I need to do a bit more work on the little fiddly bits inside the medical bag - but hes good enough for the table right now. The model is a spitting image of the official Sawbones art from TNT. He's built from a Kazak Doctor from Infinity with a Custodian Guard head from Victoria Miniatures.

I haven't updated in quite a while! Been working on some odds and ends. Wanted to share my Nuka-Cola machine I painted up yesterday.

Working today on a campaign map for our next TNT campaign.

Here's what I got so far. Been playing with photoshop to take the google earth image of the region and turn it into a Fallout inspired area map.

Finished the map!

My favorite name for a location is the Folsom Lake Re-Creation Area lol

The quality of the work is fantastic - I really do like it.

However, when I look at this it still looks likes a LotR troll... just a post apocalyptic one! Which in itself is an interesting idea!

Did you consider a headswap? That is the part that really says LotR to me.

Wonderful, I have been thinking about a similar conversion but haven't found a bargain basement troll yet.

The chain, sign and creepy body looks very behemothy.

Cheers
Matt

Just noticed this thread.  Fantastic work!

Wondering if Nor Cal means Sacramento up to Oregon, through all the hippies and pot fields, or the Bay Area?

Lots of blown-out computer company ruins would be soooooo cooooool.

So says this Northern Californian Software Engineer, at least.   ;)

Our games mainly take place in the Sacramento region - but we have thought about running some games in the Bay Area. I'd love to do a dried up San Francisco bay with rusted tankers beached in waist deep water.

Nevermind San Francisco. Let's Model A dried-out destroyed Silicon Valley.

Smart that he packed a lunch. Long days working the wasteland.

Very good use of that model.
