Been super busy lately starting up our TNT campaign.

Some of you wanted me to do a bit of tutorial for how I've painted some of my buildings. I finally snapped some pictures to share.

Painting the Apocalypse: Quick and Dirty

Prime black or whatever you like.

I then basecoat a raw umber.

Using a sponge, I start adding color to the building by dabbing.

I will then add a wash at some point.

Then a lighter color tone added with a sponge and dabbing.

For the roof I am using a burnt umber.

Then a highlight (again with a sponge).

.. and a wash.

The rubble (which I want to have that same burnt rust color, will go through the same process as the roof).

Then I add a orange to the roof again with a sponge to add that rust look. I am using Games Workshop's Ryza Rust for this.

This is all i've done so far on this guy. I will post more as I work on it.

Thanks for taking the time to do this! Definitely adding this to the 'Technical Library'. :)

Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

Lookin' good so far, is that a Plasticville Firehouse? I own a number of yet uncompleted Plasticville kits, but have held of the firehouse due to acale concerns, but it looks big enough to act as a small auto shop perhaps.

Also a question, is the sponging method all to disimilar from drybrushing, or is it simply a matter of speed?

Sponging and drybrushing share the same principle, in my opinion. They will both add paint to the raised surfaces. I think sponging has the advantage for this style of painting in that you can add paint quicker to a surface, and it naturally makes the paint look weathered wherever it is sponged on. Whereas drybrushing just hits that raised surface with color.

Also instead of dabbing, you can also rub paint into a surface really easily for a smoother finish. I think the sponge is really nice for big terrain pieces. That said, I touch things up with a brush afterwards - to get those spots that the sponge misses.

You can see how it just looks weathered and chipped already from where it was added with the sponge. If you add your layers cleverly, you can get all sorts of cool weathered effects really easily.

Thanks, I'll have to try that when I get around to my own buildings.

Also, there are many textures and qualities of sponge to choose from...

I've seen vehicles painted this way that look like they were airbrushed. The guy who painted them used those triangular, super smooth make-up sponges.

I did my rusted out Fallout cars like this. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=78764.0  I should clarify that I don't think mine look like they were airbrushed.  lol

I like the effect a lot! I'll have to try this out when I get around to my Plasticville stuff.  I really like your buildings, I can tell from looking at them that the process is fairly simple but it still gives a more-than-simple result and it seems like you can really crank them out this way.

Wanted to update with what i've been working on lately.

Some shots from my expanded Hubologists (469BS strong!). Picked this book up for a few dollars because I thought it would be hilarious - and it is!. Never imagined the extent to which scientology content actually overlaps with the post-apocalypse. Some gems: "... in the Purification program when properly and fully done, there is this side benefit of lessening the consequences of radiation exposure... and that poses the interesting possibility that only [Hubologists] will be functioning in areas experiencing heavy atomic fallout in an atomic war."

Also painted up a giant tick.

Some zombie nests / animal nests for the TNT mission Pest Control.

Based my sewer dwelling Feral Ghoul warband.

Put together a few Tribals from the Warlord games Woodland Indians box.

and finally got a basecoat and wash, and started on the layers on my super mutant. Gotta find some additional models that fit the scale and aesthetic of this guy.

Is that a Reaper mini, the super mutant?

These all look great. I like the feral ghoul bases!

Yeah thats the Reaper "Mega-mutant" (I added the manhole cover shield). I like the mini - and I grabbed it for really cheap on Miniature Market when it was on clearance. But it's hard to find other models that are in the same scale and aesthetic to use as other super mutants. I like the brother vinni model - it's just a little static, and I'm unsure whether it will be in scale with this reaper mini.

I dunno how exact a match they are, but I did a quick lineup shot of some of the models I've been gathering for Super Mutants.

Basically the same Mega-Mutant from Reaper along with more Reaper (Bones orc, some Dark Barbarian guy who will be getting a headswap), and then Hasslefree and Heresy Barbarians.  Some height variation, but all the right beefcake musculature, and even the shortest looks imposing next to a human figure.  The shorter ones I plan to mount up a bit on their bases to add to the height as well.

YES! This is exactly what I needed! Thanks so much Hupp! Good to know those reaper Orcs aren't so far off... I was eyeing those, as well as the Hasslefree stuff.

Lousy pic, but it should give you an idea about the size.
from left to right :
supermutants : CMON ogre with chain gun ; HF Druuschan Jothun #2 ; Brother Vinni Postapoc Ogre ; Dreamblade Butcher
humans : em4miniatures (grenadier) scavenger; GW cultist ; Reaper Bones' The Black Mist ; GW terminator from way back.

CMON mini comes with the rocky outcrops as base hence why he's so tall. Dreamblade figs are 40mm so that one's more of a supermutant overlord.
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
