Red Guard! (new photos, 21 Oct)
« on: 05 August 2011, 10:26:21 AM »
Mediocre late-night phone camera picture, but finally finished everything but the bases on the first of my early RCW Red units! Here we have a regular Red officer and a few soldiers leading a local unit of Red Guard/red partisans into battle.

Mostly Copplestone, a mix of Bolshevik Rifles & Red Partisans, with the officer, commisar and standardbearer from other packs; at least one of them is from Brigade, but I can't recall which one.

I've got twenty more Red rifles and an HMG next on the painting table, which should give me a nice Red platoon. Then I need to finish the interventionist British and some more Whites, I guess.

Better photo on the weekend, too.

Very nice - got a red force myself using the copplestone and brigade figures but not a patch on these.

Ahat colour have you used for the main uniform?

Look forward to seeing more.

Looking good.

The chappie in the spectacles is the Brigade figure.

The base colour is Reaper Master Series Khaki Shadow with a wash of GW Devlan Mud over it, then highlighted back with Khaki Shadow again.

Reaper MS Bone Shadow is the other greenish-khaki colour most in use; the greyish-khaki (in the commisar's tunic, for example) is Reaper MS Polished Bone. The rest of the colours are a fairly random mix of other khakis, tans, browns and greens, inspired by the note in the Osprey RCW Red Army book that when uniforms were unavailable wearing civilian clothes was authorized, but attempting to find quasi-military colours was strongly encouraged!

The majority of the Red horde finished except for some flock on the bases, which is going to have to wait until I get down to our local model store.

Almost entirely Copplestone figures, a mix of all of their Bolshevik riflemen packs and the Red Partisan pack. The Maxim HMG is Copplestone too. One of the great things about Copplestone figures is the variety in each pack, I think I've only got a couple of duplicate poses amongst the forty or so in this photo! The partisan pack especially has some great figures with lots of character. I'll be picking some of the better figures out to use as NCOs and squad leaders.

Better photographs in sunlight when we have some sunlight, the fall rain started this morning and it's dark and grey out there.

The unprimed figures in the far background are another 24 Copplestone Reds to finish off the Bolshie force for now - four more officers, one more pack each of rifles and partisans.

There's a White Russian infantry force of roughly the same size - 50-60 figures - enroute to me from Brigade Games right now, I'm going to push to get enough of them done for a first game near the end of November, using TFL's Through The Mud & The Blood rules.

Great job. I really like.  :-*
I look forward to the promised photos.

Few comments, if you will  ;):

 1. Cloth helmet (Budyenny helmets) - a subject which appeared in the Red Army in 1919.
Then there were the razgovory - cross, cloth facings on his tunic - on his chest.

 2. Badge on the cap (star) in the initial period of the war was a rarity. In the Red Guards to get the mark ordinary soldiers was problematic. Mainly used red armbands on their sleeves or a red bow on the chest.

Ha! I've been playing BoB and the RCW for years now and only just noted the STRONG resemblance between the comissar and the leader. Different heads and weapons but essentially the same figure. Brothers, perhaps?

Hmm, there's a plot point to add to my more narrative/plot driven games!

I assume you mean the commisar on the right standing with his pistol and the leader/standardbearer to the left of him under the big red banner? Most of the resemblence is an accident of painting, I think; they do have similar beard/mustache styles but I painted them both w/ black hair and paler tunics. They're from different companies, too - the commisar is my only Brigade figure (got him in a job lot from another LAF member) while the standardbearer and all of the rest are Copplestone figures.

No cav for now, after the last of the current Reds the White infantry are next, although they do have a few mounted officers from Brigade's lineup, just for variety.

After that, who knows! Horse for sure, for one side or the other, then probably one of Eureka's tachankas for whoever doesn't get the cavalry. The Reds need some sailors, too. We shall see. (whisper it) Armoured trains?

Cuprum, I know they're not strictly Red Guard but they're intended to be early RCW figures generally, or from one of the really out of the way corners of the war, where the regular Red Army wasn't quite as regular. Some of the officers have new shiny kit from Moscow, most of the rank and file are making do with whatever they can scrounge!

The Reds I will be painting up next include another batch of Copplestone's partisans, so more irregulars to reduce the amount of uniformity in the ranks!

It may be a bit Hollywood, but the Whites will include some "colourful" uniforms and other spiffy touches, to differentiate them from the Red Horde on the table.
