Guard's Guard's. (Ancient Barbarian on horse back finished)
« on: February 02, 2021, 09:32:14 PM »
Normally at this time of year I'd be looking forward to York.
Where I along with many would fall foul of socially irresponsible town planning .Then after several valiant attempts to quench an unseasonably parched throat. The annual project challenge is issued.
There's no show and no alcohol fuelled Last of the Summer Wine antics this year. Yet the' Tufty Club Survivor's' Guild' Challenge landed this morning.

It's no great surprise by the choice of board. What my challenge is.
Which amused them to a man. As I know absolutely Nothing about Frostgrave . Other than that two page pamphlet that's shoved into your had at show's from time to time.(which I normally use or recycle into something or other.)

I've no idea what constitutes a Frostgrave Warband? Other than it probably needs A magic user/ wizard( I guessed that from the cover ;D ) and Some henchmen/ sidekick types.

As for the theme. It's been set as Disk World. So I was musing with the original Night Watch of Guard's Guard's. After that . I'm vague on Rincewind or one of the Witches.Or even the librarian?

Now I know they'll be someone out there flogging Disk World figures. It doesn't matter as these will be one off sculpts.

So any insight or advice?  ( short of buying the Rule set. As it's a lock down with no chance of getting together to wrap our heads around something new.)

If you're up for some listening, Paint All the Minis has a frostgrave episode where they talk about the game for almost 2 hours.
https://patmramble.libsyn.com/ep-180-joe-mccullough-frostgrave-2nd-edition

Basically the warband building is Wizard, Apprentice, 8 soldiers.  4 of the soldiers can be specialists which are the more elite guys. Ranged weapon soldiers are specialists along with those in heavy armour.  Thugs and Thieves are free to hire so if you want a few extra guys with basic hand weapons or a dagger and light or no armour, then you'll be able to come up with some sort of 8 soldier combination at the starting gold piece budget.

MicroArt Studio appears to be the source for official discworld minis.

I'm guessing you're in Old Blighty, so Wayland Games may be cheaper (I'm on my work machine, so google is okay, but I'm not sure they would appreciate me going to those websites to check ;D)

Liam.
Guard's Guard's is definitely worth a read or a listen depending on your preference.( I often have audio books playing whilst working. Although I do have to be careful some audio books dubs tend to send me into a coma.)

Matty
Thank you very helpful I've a rough idea now of what I need to sculpt. Is a familiar possible?and can it be used in a combative role? As the luggage would be an idea candidate.
Guy
Oddly enough I did the same thing last night. I thought about
Cohen. But then I'd only need to do do figures him and a scantily clad young lady to sort out his bad back.
It's be a one side game though.

Thanks for the reference and links . With out wishing to sound pompous . I'm going to sculpt every figure coz I can  ;). The sculpting isn't why they've done this. What they think is funny is me going off in butterfly mode and not stopping till I made everything you'd need for a game.In fact I'd put money on that being their cunning plan.

I am also very interested to see the results of this - I enjoy both the Discworld and Frostgrave. My initial thoughts would be that the Night Watch would be a good basis for the soldiers in a warband and here are some other ideas for members of the party:

Wizard: Granny Weatherwax (I love the character and if she is in the band she wont be taking orders from anyone else)
Apprentice: Magrat Garlik (Rincewind would also do, or Brutha from Small Gods if your wizard is from the Thaumaturge school)
Apothecary: Nanny Ogg
Medium Construct: The Luggage
Raised Zombie: Reg Shoe
Captain: Sam Vimes
Barbarian: The Librarian (he is powerful but unarmoured so I think he suits this character type, but he could of course be a Thug). Cohen the Barbarian would also work of course!
Warhound: Gaspode
Crossbowman: Detritus the Troll in Night Watch ("remember what I told you about Mr Safety Catch!")

To be honest Frostgrave is very flexible as a system so I would start by thinking of my 10 (11 if you raise a zombie in game!) favourite Discworld characters and then shoe-horn them in!

I have a friend who did exactly this, made a Frostgrave crew using Discworld minis. It looked great!

He used the Microarts models, I look forward to seeing your ones

Mark.

I the centre of each game is an opposing is, as you said, opposing pairs of a wizard and his or her apprentice. Thematically (and I'll be the first to applaud your choice of a Dicworld setting) i would use the slightly rubbish-at-magic Rincewind as the apprentice and any one of Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully, the Librarian or some other venerable chap from the Unseen University staff. Why not the the PHead of the Department of Post Mortem Communications, Dr John Hix, for example?

Then you are, according to the rules, allowed hired help, which are up to a number characters with fixed stats for various professions (thief, barbarian, knight etc)

I would make a few of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch their escort. Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson, Captain Angua von Überwald, Sergeant Fred Colon, Corporal Nobby Nobbs, Igor to mention a few. It should be easy enought to match their characters to the team professions available in the rules.

The opposition could be the Witches. Miss Esmerelda Weatherwax seems like the obvious choice, with Tiffany Arching as apprentice. Miss Wetherwax posse could be made up of Wee Free Men and village people of Lancre.

A couple of other ideas came to mind when considering the Witches books and Nanny Ogg's family that would certainly be compatible with Hammers proposals:

Shawn Ogg (comprising the whole of the Lancre Army and armed with his invention the Lancrastian Army Knife): Thug
Jason Ogg (village Blacksmith with the ability to shoe anything from an ant upwards and fearsome in costume as leader of the Lancre Morris Men): Thug
Neville Ogg (he stole the lead from the opera house roof): Thief
Greebo: Warhound

I am already sad that your sculptures will not be on general release. :'(

I also recall that for summoned demons my mate used Death as a greater demon for the purposes of summoning  and the Death or Rats as a lesser demon.

I think summoning the Lords and Ladies would be even better. They take very poorly to iron though, if you want to stay true to theme.

There's some interesting ideas. I am going to have to re read a few books by sounds of it. As many of the names sound familiar yet I can't remember how they were described.
Because people seem to be genuinely interested in this project. I'm going spend the rest of even knocking up as much as possible of the first figure.
I'll start with the Librarian as he's a pretty easy figure to ease me back into fantasy sculpting.
