15mm Innsmouth Church build blog
« on: 22 November 2013, 05:36:09 AM »
Hi, all!

Haven't posted since the last board I built, but shortly after getting that one finished, my wife and I realized that we were having our first baby, and our hobby time decreased significantly in the mad scramble to prepare.

But the lure of the Old Ones is strong, and we finally dusted off our copy of SA and got to building together today.

As our game room is now a nursery, we have been scaling down our gaming to save space, and I happened to have some Khurasan gangsters and Octopus Cultists laying around, so we decided to take advantage of SA's already small size to make a 1 1/2' x 1' board for my 15mm models.

This is as far as we got today, but hopefully we'll be able to finish it up later in the weekend.  Most of the build is done, now we just need to texture the walls of the church, finish the main roof section, paint, flock, and add trees and gravestones to the mounds on the lower level of the board.  We had a blast making it, and can't wait to play on it!

For those interested, all project photos from sketches to current state, are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/109515576@N08/sets/72157637928872784/

Hope everyone's well, see you when we're finished!

EDIT:  Sorry for the ten attempts to post this.  I'm not awesome at the internet.  :)

That is looking brilliant, given me a bit of inspiration, glad to see you used the same sort of insulation board I am intending to use, I wasn't sure about it!

Awesome! Wish I'd gotten into 15mm years ago. That's one good looking structure.

thanks, guys!  we're having a blast with this one, hopefully it'll turn out nicely.

we got a bit more done on the board tonight.  i've been working till midnight lately, so we've only gotten an hour or so in on the last couple of nights before sleep crept up on us.  we got the "stucco" texturing on the church walls, as well as a basecoat on most of the board and a bit of drybrushing on the stone sections.  i designed the icon of dagon and got it sized out for cutting into balsa (hopefully tomorrow), and robin carved some pews and an altar as well as getting the roof sections shingled.  i decided i didn't like the look of the door, so i ripped that off and will carve a new one.

anyway, here's a mini-update before we get to really making it look neat on the next few sits.  enjoy!

thanks, mason!

yeah, we'll get in tighter once there's something to see- there's not much in the way of detail on here yet.  i'll get it under some proper lights once it's finished as well.  now to catch up on the goings-on in the MOOSE thread before i fall asleep...

thanks, guys!  UM, steal away.  i just simplified the big cave entrance from the stuart gordon movie for my icon, if you're working in 28mm you could probably use the less dumbed-down versions of the runes around the symbol.  i look forward to seeing your EOD church!

we got a couple more hours in this afternoon.  finished basic painting on everything except the main roof (which isn't quite built yet) and got everything flocked.

the board is playable at this point, and hopefully we'll be getting to that this evening!

sorry for the glue spots on the trees, just wanted to grab a few quick shots.

after all this settles, there's still the matter of carving the icon of dagon and some doors, as well as adding the church furniture robin built, detailing the lawn, adding a statue, and doing some horrible things to the cross on the face of the church.

if anyone has any ideas for church interior decorations, i'm all ears... i've never built this small before, and the scale difference has me at a bit of a loss for how to snazz up the church interior.
