TWD's Sharp Practice 2 adventures (game 3 07/08)
« on: 13 May 2016, 10:38:04 PM »
My chums and I had a game of SP2 last nigh.

And generally we think it's a Good Thing (tm) (though with reservations about our ability to get the most out of the rules)

Report and a few (I forgot to take many under the new rules pressure) pictures here:

Great report, sounds like a fun game!

I'm also a bit apprehensive if I will remember all the Command Card options - usually I don't like games where I have to keep  lots of combinations in mind (SAGA, I'm looking at you), but I'm still confident a couple of games will give me enough practice.

And I've also been on the receiving end of a force using a second deployment point - very useful stuff!

Good stuff!

As for card combos to remember there aren't many.
Your troops each have a stat line which lists what they can do, the other options are on one page in the main rules.

Generally you'll be using Sharp Practice (if possible) or boosting leaders levels to shift shock.
A Leader 3 plus 3 flags can shift a lot of shock!

Very nice!  I'll be following your blog now!  I tried SP with my father and we couldn't seem to figure it out, or I hope we couldn't because the game didn't seem that fun when we gave it a go.  I may give SP2 a look.

SP2 is a lot more accessible than the first game, based on 2 game nights, although there is some effort to understand some rules concepts such as the differences between controlled and uncontrolled fire or different options for individual units as opposed to units combined into formation.
That being said, the concepts make historical sense and give players interesting - but not unlimited - choices. I'm really enjoying it so far.
Prof Challenger, I presume?

There are a few wording issues:

There are skirmisher units and units that can skirmish (Light infantry, Skirmishers and irregular Skirmishers).
There is controlled fire (present/fire) and Officers controlling fire(Adding their CIs in dice to a shot) and Officer directing fire where an officer spends a CI to pick a particular target to fire at.

Other than that the game is really solid.

Problems I'm having at the moment is manoeuvring my line about and being overly brave or optimistic about their abilities!  Rifles are ace... :D

Yes, Rifles are great. Just so long as you remember to keep them at a distance and pile on shock, and not let fully formed units of Frenchmen charge them.
General Ballroom learned this the hard way.

My Rifle Officer, Lt Hatstand-Mentel, likewise learned not to get too close to formed lines!

Tom

I have just put some Game Rosters on Lard Island News, here:  http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/?p=5885

Fill in one for each troop type in your game, and then you have most of the clever card stuff right to hand.  It save you referring to the book for stuff which is unit specific.

Cheers

Rich

This is my impression too. We play our first big group game on Friday, a 4 player AWI bash. The rosters should come in handy.

A third game.
Not sure we're really getting the hang of it yet. I intend to do some homework.
