I cut bases out of mat board. You can make them any size you need & can cut them with a box knife & ruler. Altough I have a roller knife cuting board. I now mostly use the matboard game boards from games I buy cheap at thrift stores to pilfer game parts out of.

That's my solution: it works splendidely, but it's quite hard to do: make your prototipe of the base you like, then with silicon rubber you can make the mould, and you'll use it...

i did it for my DBA army, and it's perfect: classic bases are quite rough, but WH-style bases are really tall... so I made some kind of bases with the place where to put the lead base of minis!

whith this shape:

yes i know, but doing it by yourself is 100 times better! i mean, you should have some modelling skills, to make something good, but then you have the perfect base. i mean, it will be exactely what you need!

I take about 2 hours to make a new base mould, and then every 20 minutes i can produce a base set... it is useful, for uncommon-scale minis... and even cheaper!

I slottabase everything because that's what I started with and that's what I will finish with.  I also like the look.  Washers are also good, but I enjoy some form of consistency across my miniature collection; so it's too late to start using them.

Yes, Keeper, that's exactly the sort of shape I'm thinking of - except that if I can find/make them at 25x50, that's what I'll go for. 30mm wide for horses seems fine to me, but 60mm long seems kind of ... well, long. Hmmm. Something else to think about.

It's often called "pill-shaped". Litko do them in 3mm thick wood in the dimensions you require and they match slotta bases well in thickness.

"Pill-shaped", white knight, is exactly the description I was looking for. The word "lozenge" came to me just after I posted, but I knew it wasn't quite what I was looking for.
In any case, I'm happy to hear other people have had/use the same ideas for their horses!

well, making by your own hands pill-shaped bases should be quite hard, that's right... anyway, i don't like this shape too much:

if you like pratical solution, I think that rectangular bases are more suitable for games. if you want instead to have beautiful bases, you maybe should use long-radius round bases. maybe they're too big, but they're the best, where you can build a small diorama... like in LOTR (i only like bases of that game).

i mean, if you want a medieval horse unit, whith compact ranks, using pill-shaped bases leaves a lot of empty space between units.

if you want a horse horde, having big bases makes the unit more various and ... more pro!
