The Hobbycraft on Ladybay definitely has small sheets in multi packs. I bought square ones and circular ones 'recently' to use for terrain and on figure bases. Not sure about big sheets but I wouldn't be surprised.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Thanks for the info on the figure - it does look quite versatile.

Ahistorian: those bits of metal grinding used a the shuttle landing pad and elsewhere are actually cross stitch plastic canvas patterns that you can get in large sheets cheaply at most department stores and craft stores.
In the UK I have bought various types from a small local knitting shop (wool, patterns, etc), though not for some time.  The larger sheets are bigger than A3 size.  I also have circles and hexes, both approx. 3 inch diameter.  There were larger disks, maybe 10 inches diameter.

I think there's one near the bottom of town. It's a bit high end though, I think I'll have a shop around before I do anything (or pay anything).

On this side of the pond, the larger sheets only cost a dollar or two in the big department stores.

Just on a whim, I Googled cross stitch plastic canvas prices in the UK. Here are some of my hits:

For whatever that is worth. Good luck with the hunt! I can't sing the praises of this material enough. I use it to make metal-gridded industrial roads, foundations, platforms on buildings, and even on figure bases with an industrial feel.

Er, yes. Hence me saying this earlier...

Yes, I couldn't find them on their website when I used the words I assumed described the material, as I said earlier  ;)

Their biggest ones are 13x22".

For the few of us that don't incessantly bounce 'twixt here and TMP, there was a conversation resurrected from 2010 on the plastic sheets.

http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=186572

As I said there, we colonials seem to have plenty in 7-count and 10-count, but 14-count is a bit rare. However, the difference between 7- and 10- is sufficient to get by.

Alas, the best place I found locally as far as variety selection was HobbyLobby, and I'm boycotting them. JoAnn's comes in second. As I've said elsewhere, first trips can be intimidating to the male, but as long as you learn to filter out all the pastel colors, the folks can actually be quite friendly.

I did find a large pile of squares, with a couple of 10-, at a thrift store, for pennies per sheet, so have plenty for the foreseeable future...
