The Game that Never Was
« on: April 18, 2014, 03:26:37 PM »
I recently started up a game that wound up going nowhere because of family drama that intervened. No matter-I still got some decent pics out of it. Thought I would share my madness here.  ;D :D ;)

A stunning set-up full of eye candy.
 :-* :-* :-*

Also interested in knowing where the various vehicles etc are from.
Antenocities springs to mind for at least some.
They are great, wherever they are all from.

I was going to ask about the shuttle too.

Great looking game setup. Really gives the feel of a run-down backwater with a certain amount of tension (unobtanium miners who don't get along with the local security forces, by any chance?)

Fantastic layout. I recognise the shuttle as a Star Trek runabout as I've got one waiting to be finished. And great use (re-use?) of a bat mobile, I want one now.

Give us a bit more of the background you were going to play, please.

Shuttle is a runabout from DS9.

Ah yes, I recognise it now, cheers. Looks like a good scale match.

Looks amazing. I wish you lived nearby as I would have loved playing this game. Everything looks great!! Thanks for sharing. By the way, where did you get the Batman tumbler? Does it come in black as well. Also the scale? Thanks in advance.

Hey all! Thanks for all the comments and compliments! My ability to respond is limited because I am typing on my mobile phone, but here goes.

Vehicles. The vehicles use are mostly kit bashed toys and some models.  The wheeled armored car is an old 1/32nd seconds scale matchbox German Scout car -diecast, spruced up to look more sci fi with various beads and bets. The APC is an old toy from a company whose name I do not remember , repainted to match the rest of my colonial marine force. The large Mech inside the fortress is from the AT43 game, and the Walker outside is a reworked Mars Heroes action figure. The Batman car was from the official movie series and came in camo colors. I just gave it a brown wash to dirty it up. As for the truck, it was a gift from a friend and I have no idea where it came from! :-)

As for the game and background, I was playtesting a homegrown ruleset with some hastily concocted fluff to justify a battle. The basic idea was a clash between A colonial marine Patrol attempting to occupy an old, abandoned fortress with some local pirates and smugglers vying for control . I was attempting to test some mechanics that did not deal directly with combat so there were lots of special missions and victory conditions built into the game. The Marines need to recover stolen car go from the smugglers and get it on board the shuttle within a time limit.

The smugglers, on the other hand are trying to drive the Marines out of the base once and for all. Smuggler weaponry is pretty sparse, but they have one ace in the hole! They have an EMP device that, if they detonated close enough to the fortress will knock out all vehicles and defense systems in range, pretty much leveling the playing field. Also there is a big hefty penalty to the first player who uses lethal force in the game, so mechanics for for intimidation suppression and negotiation were to occupy the first part of the game as players maneuvered their forces into the most optimal positions. The idea was that is the smugglers could detonate the EMP at the right spot, the playing field would be much more level. If they screwed up, they wouldn't stand a chance but I guess we'll never know, will we? :-)

If I have a chance to replay, I will definitely post more pics and the result!

Great looking not-game! A big, full table of stuff! I really like the variety of vehicles - historical and various sci-fi. They all look at home, though.

Just one question - in photo 9, who's the guy with the broad-brimmed hat and the cloak?

That all looks amazing, but my question is very prosaic - where did you get that gridded stuff that demarcates the landing zone?

What a splendid set-up. Nice game as far as i can tell whith lots of nice stuff to play with. Perhaps getting into the game once in awhile can alliviate (is that a correct word?) the stress of the drama. Take care, be well.

Blacksoilbill: the dude in the hat and cloak is from the RAFM Call of Cthului range. I think he came in two pack with a mummy.  I wind up using him an agent provocateur/evil in many of my games.

Ahistorian: those bits of metal grinding used a the shuttle landing pad and elsewhere are actually cross stitch plastic canvas patterns that you can get in large sheets cheaply at most department stores and craft stores.  In the US, I get mine from Wal-Mart. I usually spray paint mine black and dry brush it with gunmetal.

Legion1965:great point!  Games can be incredibly therapeutic,  and I have been playing as many as I can (with simpler setup!)  lately - for good mental health,  mind you!
