Impetus bases for Hail Caesar?
« on: March 03, 2014, 08:21:23 PM »
Has anyone had any experience using Impetus-style bases with Hail Caesar rules? If so, does it work ok, or not so well?

I've been using Hail Caesar, but I have my armies based on several stands per unit, but I really like the look of the Impetus bases. I am thinking of rebasing on larger single bases, mostly for aesthetic reasons but it would also be a simpler method of dividing the army up. In theory it should work, since I don't need to remove casualties, but maybe I'm missing something. I would have to indicate formation changes, but that really doesn't come up much.

I've been wondering about this idea too.

I think the only way to really find out if it's viable is to play a game of Hail Caesar with either blank Impetus bases (or strictly enforcing a 'no formation change' rule fro 'Impetus formation') and see how it goes?

From checking out assorted game reports of HC on the web most armies seem to fight and die in the same formation anyway!

I put my HC figures on strips of 7 figures, and then two strips per unit base.  That way I can turn the rear strip around for box formation, or more commonly, just use an old Epic/BFG orders die to indicate formation.

There are quite a few people posting on the Hail Caesar discussion fora who play HC with Impetus-based armies without any apparent problems. Most seem to be using markers to indicate any formation changes during battle.
