Off of Belfry Street, behind the Hellbridge Temple, stands the Bloody Tusk Banquet Hall. Patrons come for the belly dancers but stay for the grog. And what happens in the Bloody Tusk stays in the Bloody Tusk.
Which is why members of the Amazon Adventuring Company have gathered in a corner to discuss a treasure-hunting expedition to the nearby Cairn Hills. (from left to right) Midori, the Eastern Berserker discusses the morality of grave-robbing with Kyra the Worshipper of Mitra. Morgan Ironwolf, veteran of the Bargle Wars studies a map of a rumored barrow with the Tara the Silent, a bandit familiar with the haunted hills.
In a nearby corner the Company of Crusaders eaves drops on the Amazons, hoping to discover the location of the rumored barrow. (from left to right) Connor, a Yeoman turned bandit strains his ears over the sound of Veteran Sir Falco Steelcross' fidgeting. Worshipping Brother Louis IV shushes Sir Falco while William O'Ryan, a Highlander Berserker, concentrates on his ale.
The Amazons discover that they are being spied upon. They win initiative (6 to 5) and receive a single fate token. Their player chooses to activate Morgan Ironwolf and Tara the Silent.
The activated women make a break for the weapons rack behind the bar using both of each of their actions to move (6" total since movement through the tavern is considered difficult).
Realizing that a fight is brewing, Sir Falco Steelcross pushes back his chair and William O'Ryan slams down his empty mug.
Sir Falco charges Morgan, swinging a clenched fist, but he stumbles against a bench (4+ Brawl would hit but for the -1 die modifier for the obstacle). O'Ryan isn't fast enough to tackle Tara.
TURN 2
Surprised by the aggressive reaction of their antagonists, Tara and Morgan lose the initiative (5 to 1, each side gains two fate tokens).
Connor looks for his bow and realizes it, too, is behind on the bar on the weapon rack (Crusaders use both fate tokens for a third activation).
Connor and O'Ryan rush past Sir Falco and a patron passed out under the bar, desperate to reach their bow and axe, respectivley. Sir Falco hammers his shield into Morgan, who would have been knocked out if it weren't for the fact that she slipped and he hit her helmet instead of her jaw (Falco attacks twice, hitting with a 5, but Morgan uses her two fate tokens to increase a 3 to five, using her light armor and shield to block the attack).
Morgan Ironwolf punches and kicks Sir Falco but he evades her blows (1 and 2 miss, she brawls on a 4+). Tara the Silent, however, leaps the bench and connects with an body blow. Sir Falco grits his teeth and resists the pain (Tara hits with a 5, but needs another 5+ to overcome Sir Falco's defense of 3).
Now that they have the Crusader Veteran outnumbered, the Amazons sieze the intiative (2 vs. 1, Amazons receive a single fate token).
Sir Falco is hammered under a rain of blows (Morgan hits twice with double sixes and Tara hits once with a 5...Sir Falco's light armor/shield saves all fail).
Sir Falco doubles over in pain as Morgan knocks him senseless (5+ damage roll overcomes his 3 defense; Sir Falco is stunned).
Connor and O'Ryan ignore their fallen comrade and continue to race for their weapons.
They reach the weapon rack, grab their gear, and turn to defend themselves.
Morgan and Tara pursue the so-called Crusaders.
Meanwhile, Sir Falco Steelcross unsuccessfully tries to drive away the tweeting birdies that are circling his head. (he needs a 6 to remove the stunned status)
The Crusaders and Amazons square off against each other (Crusaders win initiative five to three and both sides get a fate token).
With a mighty roar O'Ryan pounces on Morgan, hammering his mighty axe off her shield (his rage ability succeeds with a 6 morale check versus 2, giving him two attacks on the charge, but double threes miss since he needs a 4+, and he can't even use a fate token because he's also at -1 to hit for charging). Connor lets loose an arrow at Tara but it thunks into the bar, narrowly missing the bartender (his bow attack is 5+ and he rolls a 4; once again a fate token wouldn't help because he is -1 for Tara's cover from the bar).
Meanwhile, sensing an opportunity to knock out another Crusader, both Midori and Kyra charge the the pompous priest (Amazon player uses both activations on figures not currently engaged. The hope is to win initiative and knock out a second enemy figure, which will force the Crusaders to make a Shaken Morale Test).
But unfortunately for the Amazons, Sir Falco Steelcross finally comes back to his senses (needs a 6+ to remove his stunned status, and he only rolls a 5, however he still has his fate token which he uses now to increase his roll to 6).
(the Amazon plan fails when the Crusaders win initiative)
Sir Falco leaps on Kyra, pummeling her from behind (hits with a 6, needs a 5+ to damage her against defense 3, but because he's attacking from the rear he gets +1 to his die so he stuns the Worshipper).
On the other side of the banquet hall, Morgan Ironwolf struggles to deflect blow after blow on her splintering shield (O'Ryan hits with a 5 but Morgan uses a fate point to raise her armor/shield save from a 4 to a 5 and successfully negates the hit).
Midori finally reaches the fumbling priest and smashes him with an elbow, but the priest's girth saves him from the blow (Midori hits with a 4 but needs a 5 to damage his defense 3 and only rolls a 2). Tara the Silent tries to knock out Sir Falco from behind, but the crusader's helmet slips and blocks her blow (Tara rolls a 5 to hit from behind; Falco's armor save is a 5...I ruled his shield can not protect his rear so he needed a 6...so he uses a fate token to increase it and block Tara's attack).
Kyra is too busy babbling incoherently to join the fight (she needs a 6+ to remove the stunned status and rolls a 3).
Louis IV finally joins the fray, strangling Midori with prayer beeds (he brawls on a 5+ so he increases his 4 with a fate point and then knocks Midori out with a 5 damage roll). Sir Falco sweeps Tara's legs out from under her, and the bandit knocks her self out when her head slams on one of the benches (Falco hits with a 4 and stuns her with a 6).
With three of the four Amazons knocked out of the fight, they only receive a single activation. But that's okay because Morgan is the only one left on her feet, anyway. She punches at O'Ryan and hits but doesn't damage him (4 hits, 2 misses, 4 fails to damage his defense 3).
(with 3/4 of her adventuring company knocked out, Morgan must make a whiped out morale check. She rolls a 5, which at -2 fo being whiped out fails. She actually could have used a fate point to successfully save but she wants to flee anyway. Since there are no Legends or Companions...everyone in this fight was minions...1d6 figures flee. She rolls a 5 and that's her entire company).
VICTORY: The Crusading Company!
