Shooting with a C.Rocket / Field gun etc
« on: 29 June 2014, 02:35:21 PM »
I have probably missed what I'm looking for in the rules; can anyone point me towards the shooting rules for a Congreve Rocket Gun?

Does it use the same procedure as a thrown grenade, IHMN 3.3.7, but using the range increased of the rocket gun? ie. choose a point of aim and treat it as armour 7. It seems more appropriate that shooting an explosive rocket directly at some poor chap's nether regions (with a far greater chance of missing if the target model moved etc).

The same question arises for firing a Light Field gun (HVF) and a Light Cannon (SDRS). I also noticed an earlier thread with a pic of a WW1 French "flying pig" mortar (Scarab miniatures IIRC); should anyone wish to include a mortar team, this same indirect shooting question may crop up again.

Cheers, B.

We've met this ourselves. We decided that, since a rocket gun has +3 weapon bonus and most of the people shooting it also have a SV of +3, then your chances of hitting a point on the ground with a defensive value of 7 were nothing short of miraculously good. So we decided that rocket guns and artillery shot at people just like any other sort of weapon.
You may, of course, decide differently.

Thanks for the reply Silbuster,

I see your point in situations where you have a double +3 on the dice roll, but I've been looking at the Boxer list (SDRS) wherein the boxer musketmen have a +1SV (so I'm down to +4) and if they form a L.Cannon crew, they are down to +3, firing every second turn.  :( . In these situations, I'm not going to target the chap sprinting across the ground in front of me; I'm targeting the wall/brick/small blade of grass that is stationary in front of him; as long as I can draw a line of sight, I'm taking the easy shot.

Maybe a choice of HE or AP ammo would decide the shooting method.

FWIW, Artillery is usually an "area" weapon once you get past the Line and Column tactics of musketry/mass battles and usually used in larger contexts than a 'sniper' weapon.   :)

Was there ever a follow up on this question ?

:) I've been waiting patiently for a ruling too. I don't have my Rocket Gunners or cannon painted yet so I'm happy to wait atm.

My apologies, there has been no follow up as Charles has insisted on having a holiday, most inconsiderate of him I know, but it can't be helped  :o lol

This is really a reminder to Craig that he was going to get back to the forum on this one. If there is a reply elsewhere, be so kind as to direct me to it.

I am painting my Naval Boarding Party for my Christmas game and one of the figures has a Congreve Rocket Gun so I would very much like to understand how it is going to work.

Tim
